Health Problems That May Be Caused By …
Large amounts of the following crops and foods are genetically modified: soy, corn, corn syrup, canola oil, cottonseed oil, sugar beets (and sugar from beets), maltodextrin, aspartame (in Nutrisweet and Equal), alfalfa, and Hawaiian papaya. Some sugar and some zucchini and yellow crookneck squash are genetically modified. Most processed food contains at least one GM ingredient.
Genetically Modified Organisms, GMOs, were created by scientists. They shot DNA (genes) into the cells of plants, bacteria, and even a few animals. This caused the plants to give birth to offspring that had many different traits, appearances, amounts of minerals, and characteristics including ability to survive herbicides. Some contain proteins of bacteria, etc that people are allergic too. BT corn produced a toxic pesticide in every cell that does not biodegrade (decompose) easily. Dr. Guy McPherson claimed that the gene for BT toxin penetrated human intestine cells and caused them to produce pesticide. This pesticide was found to eat holes in the intestines of animals and humans. That explained the recent increase in gastrointestinal disorders observed by health care practitioners (from the Institute for Responsible Technology). Jeffrey Smith claims that a study in the Journal of Applied Toxicology on Feb 8, 2012 shows that BT toxin pokes holes in human cells and that might explain the rise of the ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, constipation, and all the inflammatory-based gastrointestinal disorders, which are on the rise. ["A Special Interview with Jeffrey Smith" by Joseph Mercola] Also, Jeffrey Smith said that leaky-gut is linked to cancer, autism, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, celiac disease, etc. "...it appears that Roundup and BT toxin in GMOs in general may predispose the body to react to gluten."

In the Sunday evening presentation on Oct. 6 at Woodward Park, Fresno; Dr. Guy McPherson, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Natural Resources and Evolutionary Biology gave a speech; and a film by Jeffrey Smith titled “Genetic Roulette” was shown. The following information was presented:
Dr. McPherson claimed that the FDA has 44,000 pages of memos, since 1992, from scientific staff who did not think that GMO foods were safe. These memos warned about health problems from GMOs, mentioning autoimmune disorders, etc. The FDA disregarded these memos and kept them secret. The White House kitchens are Organic now.
Dr. McPherson mentioned that 90% of pregnant women have BT toxin in their bodies from GMO corn. He recommended eating non-GMO food 2 weeks before conception. IgF1 in Bovine Growth Hormone causes several times the rate of breast cancer in women. GMOs will affect the growth and life of an unborn child. He also complained that WIC provides only GMO variety infant formulas.
Unfortunately, the FDA requires no safety testing -- only the GMO corporations have a responsibility to test. Recent studies have shown an increase in allergies, infertility, immune problems, faulty insulin regulation, changes within organs and cancerous tumors – he said.
There are US laws prohibiting the mandatory labeling of GMOs. A research professor was mobbed and his car beaten and he suspects that Monsanto was responsible for that.
A farmer had itchy rashes produced by plucking GM cotton and thousands of animals feeding on it became sick. A study was performed, giving animals GM cotton seeds in feed (with non-GMO in feed for the control group). It showed dead animals from GMO cottonseed.
A parent's son ate raw corn when he got itchy and almost died. In another family, all 4 kids had food allergies when the family did not have a history of allergies in the previous generation.
The body attacks foreign genes, causing inflammation. In studies, inflammation has been observed in the intestinal track and also numerous digestive disorders, allergies, autoimmune and thyroid disease and blood sugar imbalances.
The Royal Society of Canada warned about damage to the health of coming generations. In their opinion, GMO corn accelerated aging and produced changes in kidneys and spleen. Bt toxin also produced gastro-intestinal damage and leaky-gut cases in insects.
In humans, Bt toxin has been found to cause leaky intestines, which could potentially contribute to asthma, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, or eczema. If a leaky intestine exists, large food particles have the chance to escape into the bloodstream and allergic reactions could result.
The number of people in the United States who have eczema increased exponentially in the last few decades. 100 years ago, very few people had eczema. Autism skyrocketed recently and there are now much more people with Celiac and other types of allergies than ever before. There are gastro-intestinal problems, fungal and viral infections which never existed in the past.
Animals eating GMO foods showed signs of autism. “We are finding the same thing in cattle, as in autistic children”, said Dr. McPherson. Children with autism have intestinal problems: gut problems and bloating, similar to what GMO-fed animals experienced. One child had autism, GI problems, fungal and viral infections. When GMO's were taken out of that child's diet, he improved.
Animals have been found to be weak, deficient and ill, after eating GMO food. Plants are also getting sick quicker. After being sprayed with Roundup, plants are shown to have much less copper, zinc, magnesium, etc.
Studies found that, if three minerals are deficient in their bodies, animals would not respond to antibiotic treatments.
Glyphosate (Roundup) is genotoxic, causing birth defects. In other studies, animals eating GMO soy had smaller babies, or they lost the ability to procreate. The loss of fertility in livestock, by itself, could generate a worldwide disaster.
Dr. McPherson warned that soy and corn sprayed with Roundup show signs of a microorganism the size of a virus, like a fungus, killing embryos in livestock. He said that Don Huber described this organism. Dr. McPherson warned of the possibility of germ warfare and this matter should be considered an emergency.
Our food exports decreased already. Fields become invaded by herbicide-resistant weeds, giant weeds produced by the weed-killing poisons themselves.
Is there any hope? Yes, hope exists. In many cases, when GM foods were replaced with organic food, the symptoms of disease have been observed to go away, in humans and animals. Returning to non-GMO corn helped pigs eat more and the fatal diarrhea disappeared and the conception rate increased.
He mentioned Dr. Arpad Pusztai, a renowned researcher from the UK, who performed rat studies and found that GMOs are unsafe.
Vote with your dollars. Do not buy GMO food. Buy instead organic foods, because they are not allowed to be genetically modified.
Jeffrey Smith in his film mentioned, "We are finding- based on the experience of veterinarians and pet-owners - that the animals that eat basically the byproducts of the human food supply are suffering from the same diseases and disorders that humans are and report getting better when they switch to a non-GMO diet.” [from "A Special Interview with Jeffrey Smith]. Also Jeffrey Smith mentioned that most of those people in his audiences who removed GMO's from their diet indicated an improvement in their health. .. Someone said, "My client couldn't get pregnant for 5 years, switched to a non-GMO diet, and was pregnant three weeks later." By switching to non-GMO feed, a pig farmer in Denmark, his pigs got rid of Crohn's disease or irritable bowel. There are no more deaths in those pigs from ulcers. We hear from our audience members that their ulcers disappeared. Acid reflux disappeared. "You look at liver diseases going up in the United States, and then you see the liver problems in the rats and mice fed with GMOs consistently...".

Dr. Mercola, Doctor of Osteopathic Sciences, wrote that natural non-GMO corn contains 437 times more calcium and 56 times more magnesium than GM corn. (from "The Organic Prepper", July 20, 2013) Dr. Mercola claims that missing magnesium produces health problems and that 300 biological processes will not function causing heart problems, muscle contractions, circulation problems, narrowing of arteries and nerve problems.
Another doctor advised a patient to avoid reverse osmosis and bottled waters and coffee because they are acidic and to eat more green vegetables especially broccoli which are basic and containing calcium and magnesium because his blood was too acidic. Acidity was contributing to the few outbreaks of cancer that he had. Numerous studies conclude that the lack of calcium and magnesium increases the cancer risk. I recall that an American Indian Professor, Matt Watson, said that corn cannot be digested and is harmful if it is not treated with burnt limestone CAOH (which is basic) before eating it as is the native American tradition. (I suspect that Americans are malnourished).

A 2003 article from The Organic Consumers Association read at the event listed countries and regions of countries where GMOs were banned (forbidden) which included Italy, Austria, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Portugal, Greece, Spain, UK, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Philippines, Saudi Arabia (banned GE wheat and food made from GMOs), Egypt, Algeria, Brazil, and Paraguay. Now Mexico banned GMO corn.

The March Against Monsanto Fresno Group led a march on Blackstone Ave from Herndon to Nees on October 12, 2013 at 11 am. About 50 people marched, most carrying signs. The marchers chanted: "No Monsanto !, GMOs have got to go !". Some shouted that Monsanto should be jailed for genocide.

A few articles from The Institute for Responsible Technology were read during the march:
"…Soy allergies skyrocketed by 50% in the UK, soon after GM soy was introduced.
Cooked GM soy contains as much as 7 times the amount of a known soy allergen.
GM corn contains an allergen not found in natural varieties.

"By the third generation, most hamsters fed GM soy were unable to have babies and suffered high infant mortality; some had hair growing in their mouths."
"The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) urges physicians to advise all patients to avoid genetically modified (GM) food.
They state, "Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food." These include:
"Infertility", "Immune problems", "Accelerated aging", "Faulty insulin regulation", "Changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system."
According to the AAEM," lab animals fed GMOs suffered from reproductive disorders, immune dysfunction, signs of premature aging, gastrointestinal problems, organ damage, and insulin and cholesterol issues."

An article by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor was read. It was about a recent study entitled, "a Comparison of the Effects of Three GM Corn Varieties on Mammalian health" by Gilles-Eric Seralini published in "The Food & Chemical Toxicology Journal". The abstract of this article states: "...We conclude that these data highlight signs of hepatorenal toxicity, possibly due to the new pesticides specific to each GM corn..." This means toxic to the liver.
A more convincing study done by Seralini, "Long term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize" published in the Food Chemical Toxicology journal, vol. 50, issue 11, Nov 2012 states in its abstract: "The health effects of a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize (from 11% in the diet), cultivated with or without Roundup, and Roundup alone (from 0.1 ppb in water), were studied 2 years in rats. In females, all treated groups died 2-3 times more than controls, and more rapidly....Females developed large mammary tumors almost always more often than and before controls, the pituitary was the second most disabled organ; the sex hormonal balance was modified by GMO and Roundup treatments. In treated males, liver congestions and necrosis were 2.5 - 5.5 times higher....Males presented 4 times more large palpable tumors than controls which occurred up to 600 days earlier. Biochemistry data confirmed very significant kidney chronic deficiencies..."

Mice, rats, and hamsters are used in studies because they have body organs similar to the body organs of humans.
The Daily Mail reported: "The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as severe liver and kidney damage. The researchers said 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group." This was published in The Daily Mail

Lee Euler, a cancer specialist, commented in Newsletter # 144 written in 2012: "Substantial health problems linked to GMOs are starting to surface. Studies are uncovering links to fertility problems and birth defects and a cancer link...". In Newsletter #186 Lee Euler said, "GM foods are increasingly being linked to disease-including cancer...There is a cancer link that's been confirmed both by a Russian study and by British environmentalists."(from http://www.cancerdefeated.com/)

Nora Benachour and Gilles-Eric Seralini in their study called "Glyphosate Formulations Induce Apoptosis and Necrosis in Human Umbilical, Embryonic, and Placental Cells published in Chem. Res. Toxicol, Article D0l, 12/23/2008, showed as summarized in the abstract: "This work clearly confirms that the adjuvants in Roundup formulations are not inert. Moreover, the proprietary mixtures available on the market could cause cell damage and even death around residual levels to be expected, especially in food and feed derived from R formulation-treated crops." The scientists evaluated the toxicity of four herbicides found in Roundup (R) formulations, from 105 times dilutions, on 3 different human cell types: "This dilution level is far below agricultural recommendations and corresponds to low levels of residues in food or feed." “All R formulations cause total cell death within 24 h…”.

The GMO tomato was allowed on the market in 1995 by the FDA then recalled and withdrawn after Calgene carried out three 28-day rat studies. The second group of rats showed lesions in four out of 20 female rats fed transgenic tomato.

("In a provocative new peer-reviewed study published in Clinical Epigenetics, researchers led by a former FDA toxicologist purport to have found a very real link between HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) consumption and autism... It pieces together what's known about the genetic and metabolic factors involved with autism, including the growing evidence of a link between autism and mercury and organophosphate pesticide exposure. Essentially, HFCS can interfere with the body's uptake of certain dietary minerals-namely zinc. Dr Mae-Wan Ho and Dr. Eva Sirinathsinghji in ISIS Announcement 24/05/13 of The Institute of Science in Society, 2013, listed the following problems of GMOs:
Referring to the CaMV 35S promoter, most widely used in commercial GM crops, "Recent evidence also suggests that the promoter may enhance multiplication of disease-associated viruses including HIV and cytomegalovirus...". "In the only monitoring experiment carried out with appropriate molecular probes so far, China has detected the spread of a GM antibiotic resistance gene to bacteria in all of its major rivers...".
They listed the following problems with glyphosate tolerant GMO crops: Herbicide use per acre has doubled in the US within the past 5 years… "Scientific evidence accumulated over three decades documents miscarriages, birth defects, carcinogenesis, endocrine disruption, DNA damage, general toxicity to cells, neurotoxicity, and toxicity to liver and kidney at glyphosate levels well below recommended agricultural use." Glyphosate affects numerous biological functions that require metal cofactors and "...promotes the growth of the pathogenic bacteria, leading to autism and other diseases." "Rats fed Roundup contaminated and Roundup tolerant maize beyond the required 90 days showed a startling range of health impacts. Females were 2 to 3 times as likely to die as controls and much more likely to develop mammary tumours.... Males also develop kidney or skin tumours 4 times as often as the controls and up to 600 days earlier."
"Livestock illnesses from glyphosate tolerant GM feed including reproductive problems, diarrhoea, bloating, spontaneous abortions, reduced live births, inflamed digestive systems and nutrient deficiencies. Evidence has also emerged of chronic botulism in cattle and farmers as the result of glyphosate use." "Glyphosate is lethal to frogs and Roundup is worse; it increases toxic blooms, and accelerates the deterioration of water quality. It use also coincides with the demise of monarch butterflies." "Forty crop diseases are now linked to glyphosate use and the number is increasing."
They listed the following problems with BT GM crops: Crop failures. "Fungicide use and insecticide treatment of corn and soybean have gone up dramatically since the introduction of Bt crops." "Contrary to industry's claim that BT is harmless to non-target species, independent studies showed that Bt toxins elicit immune response in mammals in some cases comparable to that due to cholera toxin. This is consistent with farm workers' reports of allergic symptoms affecting the eyes, skin and respiratory tract." "A new study found Bt proteins toxic to developing red blood cells as well as bone marrow cells in mice.'' "Toxicity to human kidney cells has been observed..." Bt toxins harm non-target species including ...monarch butterflies and bees...and have "been linked to the emergence of new plant diseases and reduced crop yields."
Dr. Thierry Vrain, a former research scientist for the Canadian government, refuted the claims of the biotechnology companies that their genetically engineered crops yield more. Also he wrote, "The scientific literature is full of studies showing that engineered corn and soya contain toxic or allergenic proteins."(http://gmosummit.org)./

Dr. McPherson said that in droughts, Organics outperform GMOs and claims there is 1 and a half times as much food on the planet as people need, but it is too unaffordable.
Jeffrey Smith said that last year "...of all the categories of health and wellness claims...the one category that grew in sales more than anyone else was "non-GMO" or "GMO-free." In fact, when the Whole Foods president was interviewed by USA today, he said that when a product becomes verified as non-GMO, it increases sales by 15 to 30 percent."
The marchers demanded that the US ban or label GMOs as 61 other countries had done. You may also avoid GMOs by buying foods labeled “Organic”. Certified Organic foods are not permitted to be made from genetically modified crops.
