San Francisco | Labor & WorkersTrade Unionists Protest Mitsui PMA Union Busting
Labor activists protested the union busting by Mitsui which owns United Grain elevators in the port of Vancouver, Washington. Mitsui has brought in scabs to run the elevators. Mitsui and United Grain are part of the Pacific Maritime Association which PMA which is the employer association that West Coast ILWU longshore workers will be negotiating with next year. A rally and march was held on March 15, 2013 in San Francisco to protest union busting in the Port Of Vancouver Mitsui-United Grain operation. The Local at the port ILWU Local 4 is the home base of ILWU International president Bob McEllrath also known as "Big Bob" and "The General". The bosses with the support and collusion of "Big Bob" have also imposed a 12 hour day on the workers at other grain elevators, a shape up at the hiring hall and the right to bring in scabs when workers stop work for health and safety conditions.
These conditions are a direct result of the International supporting the EGT contract on ILWU Local 21 members in Longview, Washington. Bosses now want the same agreement at all other grain ports and will be demanding similar language in the upcoming west coast ILWU fight.
