Although you would hardly know it from US media, before Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast of the US , it did the same in the far poorer countries of the Caribbean . In Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo province, the damage was the worst the country has ever known.
The people of those areas of Cuba are getting much more help from their government than the poor of New York , New Jersey etc are getting from ours -- but Cuba’s government has far fewer resources to start with. So we are joining together with the staff of La Peña Cultural Center on January 5 to hold a benefit concert that will not only show that people of the Bay Area are concerned about the plight of our sisters and brothers in Cuba, but also provide them with some funds to help rebuild.
We already have jazz-blues singer Barbara Dane, her son Pablo Menendez of Grupo Mezcla who will be coming from Cuba, Mimi Fox and John Santos and we are expecting more.

All proceeds will go for Cuba Hurricane Sandy Relief and La Peña.
The event is co-sponsored by MEDICC, the Cuban group (with a branch in Oakland) that publishes information on Cuba's medical system and works directly with the program to provide a medical education at Cuba's Latin American Medical School (ELAM) to students with a commitment to bring healthcare to underserved communities.
