Water Decision May Be Last Legal Hurdle Preventing UC Santa Cruz Development
Update: The December 5th LAFCO meeting has been canceled due to a recent court ruling that the EIR addressing the UCSC water application is inadequate.
On Wednesday, December 5th at 9:00 a.m., the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) was to reconvene for what may have been the final hearing concerning the request by UC Santa Cruz to extend the water service needed to develop 240 acres of Upper Campus natural habitat, which would require over 250 million additional gallons of water per year from the Santa Cruz water supply.
Previously, LAFCO's decision regarding water service to the proposed new UCSC development in Upper Campus was the last major legal hurdle that stood in the way of construction actually occurring. At the LAFCO meeting, community members hoped to, "form a powerful presence on behalf of the land, the water, and our collective future!"
