Come and learn about all the winter birds migrating to Lake Merritt!

Meet at 2pm at the main entrance of the Rotary Science Center (600 Bellevue Ave) at Lake Merritt.

Bring raingear/umbrella and binoculars and a birding field guide if possible. However, the waterbirds we will be concentrating on are usually very easy to see even without binoculars. This is a guided walk of about an hour (or longer for those really interested) along the shore of Lake Merritt and aimed at beginners but also anyone who has some birding experience and wanting to sharpen their skills.

We will be concentrating on waterfowl (ducks, geese, grebes, loons, cormorants, etc.), particularly native birds which migrate to Lake Merritt from the north and the interior United States and Canada and are winter visitants in this area. Identification will be emphasized, but also many aspects of the birds’ ecology and migrations will be discussed. Land birds will also be identified and discussed as appropriate.

This walk will be conducted rain or shine!

Your guide will be Ron Felzer, who has been teaching Biology and Environmental Studies at Merritt College since 1970.
