Come along on a very different walking tour of downtown San Francisco, and help KALW.
The airwaves are the public domain, aren't they? Nobody made the frequency spectrum. Technology accesses it, but ownership or use rights of a particular bandwith is effectively a monopoly. With public sanction of use-right, no one else can use that piece of the material universe. And competition for desirable pieces of the bandwidth sets the price for that spot "on the dial." So why shouldn't the public receive the fair market rent for that bit of the universe? Collecting that value would eliminate the need for pledge drives for public radio and tv: bandwidth rents paid by commercial enterprise would pay for commercial-free broadcast.
Now apply that thinking to land, and you have the recipe for social justice. Just that thinking is the subject of a walking tour of San Francisco social movement history that will transform the way you look at economics, society, and political objectives.
There's no charge, but all donations will go to KALW.
