The roots of the Egyptian Revolution go back to a decade of simmering worker and student unrest under "emergency" law. The popular uprising of January 2011 that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak was just the beginning of a long struggle with military rule and political Islam, but it also set into motion an explosion of political activism, loss of fear, and artistic creativity. Sharat G. Lin recounts his experiences in the last four years in the uniquely Egyptian "art of revolution" and its lessons for us. Dr. Lin is president of the San José Peace and Justice Center. He writes on global political economy, the Middle East, South Asia, labor migration, and public health.
