Food First, of Oakland, CA, an international food policy action-research organization dedicated to ending the injustices that cause hunger, is pleased to present its first ever artist in residence, Jennifer Johns. During her 2-year term of service, Johns will spearhead a new campaign called Go Liv! The aim of this grassroots “edutainment” project is to use art and food as a means to bring people together to raise consciousness and capital and to invest in local food systems in the U.S. and internationally.
The food system is connected to all forms of industry, from transportation and health to finance and media, which means that it impacts our environment, educational system, crime, and international affairs. Creating local, equitable, accessible and affordable food systems, controlled by our presently under-served communities will change the lives of all people on the planet for the better!
In each city the Go Liv Team will identify a stakeholder group and work with them to identify the opportunities and roadblocks to food justice in that food system and community. The team will then work with the local “artivists” (artist + activist) to produce art and performances to share the findings with the community. The money will be used to subsidize local urban farming, support local level promotion for farmers markets, cooking classes and anything else that will help to bring the community together.
The Go Liv campaign will begin officially in January of 2013 with the release of the first suite of music “The Menu”. Please visit us online http://www.go-liv.com
