A heroine lives among us: abortion rights activist and political cartoonist Pat Maginnis
When asked how many leaflets she thought she had distributed in her lifetime, octogonerian Pat Maginnis responded that she had stopped counting after a million.
In 1959, Patricia Maginnis began handing out information on San Francisco street corners about obtaining affordable illegal abortions. Through her gesture, Ms. Maginnis became the first abortion rights activist in history. In 1961, she formed the Society for Humane Abortion that called for the repeal of all laws criminalizing abortion in California. She also developed a do-it-yourself abortion method that many women on the West Coast used to terminate unwanted pregnancies. Still active after all these years, Pat participates in the weekly Lake Merritt Neighbors Organized for Peace anti-war walks every Sunday, and continues to publish witty and informative cartoons about the ways of the world. [LMNOP starts at the pergola at the northeast end of Lake Merritt at 3PM every Sunday].

I know Pat. She's one of those fighters who just doesn't give up. An inspiration to us all
More walkers for peace are always welcome to walk around Lake Merritt with us on Sundays. We meet at 3pm at the colonnade on the north side of Lake Merritt.
Delighted to see this tribute to this amazing women's rights pioneer—history's first abortion rights activist! I administer her website and am in the process of reclaiming and resurrecting it, but in the meantime, the site is back up at http://www.patmaginnis.wordpress.com and if you're on Facebook, please "like" and comment on http://www.patmaginnisandthearmyofthree !
