Tarsands Titanics in Sacred Burrard Inlet
A 10-min short documentary film says that canoes, not tarsands oil supertankers connect us to the heart and soul of our origins and revival in Burrard Inlet.
Kinder Morgan Inc is proposing to expand twin its Transmountain pipeline from the Alberta tarsands to Vancouver BC. 500 supertankers per year would be required to ship 650,000 - 1 million barrels of tarsands per day through Burrard Inlet.
Dredging and the massive size of supertankers in this very narrow inlet threaten Vancouver's drinking water, natural environment, parks, tourism, image, fish habitats, economy etc. Vancouver's water is supplied through the pipes under Burrard Inlet. As the oil-driven global warmining induces a rise in atmospheric and water temperatures, our water supplies shrink, salmon in the rivers die. There is very little water in the existing reservoirs right now.
We should remember that it was WATER that made Metro Vancouver. While Vancouver paved over its waterways, rivers in North Vancovuer remain one of Vancouver's most important life artheries.
Kinder Morgan's proposal to ship tarsands through Burrard Inlet is a major security threat. The inlet, surrounding cities and mountains would have to become a shut-down high security zone to protect the tarsands supertankers from any potential attacks. A potential explosion of a tarsands-loaded supertanker would wipe out the area as we know it. Due to geographic features of the area and the positioning of the cities within it, ensuring the safety of tarsands supertankers in Burrard Inlet will prove to be realistically beyond the control of military naval powers.
