Femen activists have been giving material support to the Pussy Riot defendants in Moscow, including cutting down a cross in a Russian town square to symbolize uprooting repressive Christianity, especially that of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Russian Orthodox Church is rapidly becoming indistinguisable from the state. During Putin's tenure the Russian Orthodox Church has become the largest landowner in Russia. The head of the church is a former Russian Secret Service head. The Pussy Riot defendants were convicted of blasphemy charges, and sentenced to two years for Thought Crimes because they exposed this.
