As the push to approve, fund, and build a peripheral canal ramps up, the voices asking to slow it down or stop it are getting louder.
Salmon Water Now’s newest video, A Costly Mistake (4:54), looks at the impact that the first round of massive plumbing systems had on California (Central Valley Project and State Water Project). Moving all that water from where it falls to where it doesn’t has consequences. Proponents of the project don’t address those issues and they certainly do not address the long-term goals for that water when the land salts up and crops can no longer be planted on much of the West side of Valley – the very place that water from a peripheral canal is intended to go.

Putting irrigation water on the toxic dirt on the West side of the Central Valley was not a very good idea 70 years ago. The video looks at the history of how the Central Valley Project came to be and asks a simple question – do we really want to make another costly mistake in the name of industrial agriculture?
The push to approve, fund, and build the peripheral canal is moving at wrap speed. There are so many reasons to stop it, or at the very least slow it down. But, It seems to be the intent of Governor Brown to move forward with the plan, no matter the consequences to the environment and California’s fiscal health.
