On July 3rd, 2012, I interviewed Professor of Politics and Chair of Mid-Eastern Studies at the University of San Francisco, Dr. Stephen Zunes about the ongoing uprising in Bahrain, the human rights situation there and U.S. foreign policy toward the island nation. (36:57)
We discussed the continuing U.S. economic and military support for Bahrain despite ongoing human rights abuses in the wake of the brutal suppression of a largely nonviolent pro-democracy movement that erupted early last year. Dr. Zunes also talked about the reasons behind the differing treatment of Bahrain by the U.S. (as opposed to the U.S. reaction to the violent suppression of uprisings in Syria and Libya for example). Finally we discussed the way in which the mainstream U.S. media has handled the situation in Bahrain, and what he considers to be some good sources for coverage of events in the Middle East.

Governments get the support of U.S. imperialism because of their human rights abuses, not despite them. No support to the Democrats and Republicans! End U.S. imperialism through socialist revolution! |
