As Egyptians went to the polls in the second and final round of the nation’s first free election for president on June 16 and 17, the military announced a series of decrees which crushed the hope that was born in last year’s democratic revolution. Although millions of Egyptians placed their trust in the military for their role in ousting Hosni Mubarak after decades of one-party rule, it’s now the generals who are clearly blocking a transition to democracy.
