FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 18th Oakland, CA
People's School for Public Education Begins on Day 4 of the Sit-In at Lakeview Elementary Oakland, CA—On Monday, June 18th, at 9:00 am, the Lakeview Sit-In will open its doors to students across Oakland, commencing a free social justice focused Summer School. The People's School for Public Education aims to bring further community awareness to closure of 5 elementary schools, including Lakeview Elementary. Organizers of the school, which includes parents and teachers from the directly affected schools in addition to teachers from across the district, will speak to Press at 10:00 am, outside the doors of Lakeview Elementary. The opening of the People's School for Public Education marks the 4th day of the Lakeview sit-in. Participants demand a stop to all school closure, or the resignation of Tony Smith, superintendent of the OUSD. The sit-in at Lakeview is held in solidarity with all parents and teachers struggling to demand quality public education. Organizers plan to hold the "People's School for Public Education" throughout the week.
