May Day Strike Shuts Down S. F. Ferry Service
Video of picketing at the San Francisco Ferry Terminal on May 1, 2012 (2:54). A strike by ferry workers represented by the Inlandboatmen's Union [ http://www.ibu.org/ ] shut down the morning commute ferry service from Sausalito and Larkspur. The workers have been working without a contract due to stalled negotiations with the Golden Gate Bridge Highway & Transportation District.
The IBU also led pickets which shut down the ferry terminals in Sausalito and Larkspur, California that morning. The IBU is the Marine Division of the ILWU.
The IBU is also part of the Golden Gate Labor Coalition, a coalition of 19 unions which represent workers on bridges, ferries and buses and which bargains collectively with the Golden Gate District.
The Golden Gate Labor Coalition canceled a planned action called “Occupy the Golden Gate Bridge” and instead supported the ferry pickets of the IBU. [ http://occupythebridge.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/may-1st-golden-gate-rally-leaflet.pdf ]
Local Occupy groups, including Occupy Oakland, Occupy San Francisco, and Occupy Marin had been building for a major action at the Golden Gate Bridge in solidarity with the bridge workers.
Some Occupy protesters joined the pickets at the ferry terminals on May Day, which were also supported by Bay Area labor councils.
