The popular uprising in Egypt has unleashed a revolutionary process in which the military, business elites, workers and secular youth, and advocates of political Islam have stakes. The roots of the uprising provide critical clues to prospects for democratic reforms, economic changes, and the struggles that lie ahead. Does the Egyptian experience provide new role models for nonviolent protest, “leaderless” movements, and new media?
Sharat G. Lin is president of the San José Peace and Justice Center. He writes on global political economy, the Middle East, labor migration, and public health, and has lived for many years in the Arab World. He has spent many years living in the Middle East, and most recently has witnessed the Egyptian Revolution before, during, and after the initial uprising.
