MJC Budget Cut Documentary Titled "MJC: The Crisis Begins" Premieres Online to 1,000 views
A documentary produced about the Modesto Junior College Budget Cuts of 2011...
One year after the original events a dozen laid off faculty (including tenured instructors, part time instructors and staff) speak out against the program cuts that caused them to lose their jobs at Modesto Junior College in Spring 2011. The documentary series entitled MJC: The Crisis Begins is a non-profit mini doc in eight parts and chronicles the fall of several important community programs that were abruptly ended due to the schools overall budget woes, many of which were successful vocational and community programs that has left a cultural hole in the central valley.
MJC: The Crisis Begins has been released for one week as of this article and has already garnered the attention of 1,000 views between the eight short episodes of the mini series. The documentary chronicles the overall issue of MJC's financial woes and sudden and heartbreaking decision to eliminate whole programs to cover it's deficit. Former and current instructors, staff and students weigh in on the flawed process used to eliminate their programs over others and the final days of each program is documented.
The purpose of this documentary is to serve as a reminder of what these programs meant to the community and how little was done to research if their elimination was necessary or even beneficial to the school's financial problems in the long run.
Part One: "The Riffed" describes the overall issue and the running time is 30 minutes. Each of the 7 parts afterward are non-linear and self contained discussing each program and showing their final days as part of MJC's curriculum. The series is designed to be a "watch what you want" where the viewer can watch and share just the portion of the series that is important to them.
