PROGRAM NOTES 02/24/12

From JAPAN  The last nuclear reactor in western Japan has been shut down for inspection- the 2 remaining nuclear reactors will be shut down by late April. More than 40% of the citizens in the regions near the Fukushima plant were exposed to radiation beyond the annual safety limit. Media was allowed to be near the Fukushima reactors for the first time this week. Cement is being laid atop the seabed offshore of the Fukushima power plant to stop the radioactive materials from spreading at sea. The US says it may begin arming anti-government demonstrators in Syria.

From CHINA  China is urging the Syrian government and rebels to cease all violence against civilians, and disagrees with the idea of other countries arming opposition forces. China says that the veto of the UN resolution against Syria was not a result of partiality, but of considering what is best for the Syrian people. The mayor of Nagoya Japan denies that the Rape of Nanking occurred in 1937, angering the Chinese people. The Chinese firm Great Wall Motors is to begin having their autos assembled in Bulgaria. China wants Israel to accept the reconciliation between the Palestinian factions of Fatah and Hamas.

From CUBA An Israeli human rights organization is criticizing Israel's increased imprisonment without charge or trial of Palestinians. There are claims of a media campaign targeting Venezuela and especially President Hugo Chavez and his health.

From SPAIN  Last Sunday in Spain up to one-half million people protested against reforms to the labor market and cuts to social programs. This week saw student in Valencia, who were protesting education cuts, being beaten by riot squads.

From GERMANY  An analysis of the latest Greek bailout- can Greece ever repay its growing debts, and can it stay in the Eurozone?

 

PROGRAM NOTES 02/17/12

From CHINA  Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao told EU leaders that China is ready for a bigger role in resolving the Eurozone debt crisis. China is complaining about the growing US trade protectionism, specifically the 100% tariff on Chinese made solar panels and the outright banning of some solar products.

From JAPAN  A recent NHK poll shows that only 20% of those surveyed support the restarting of dozens of idle nuclear power plants in Japan. The high reading in one of the damaged Fukushima reactors has continued to rise, despite further efforts to cool it down. Tepco, the company that owns the Fukushima nuclear reactors, wants the Japanese government to increase public funds to pay out claims and support the company- the government insists on having a say in how the company is run.

From CUBA  A Viewpoint on the long-running US practice of saturating Cuba with anti-Castro radio and television signals, including calls for terrorist acts and illegal immigration.

From SPAIN  Demonstrators in Bahrain have been barred from the capital, and the Syrian government denies that it has committed crimes against humanity. Israel accuses Iran of terrorist attacks in India, Georgia, and Thailand, while Iran formally accused Israel of involvement in the murder of 5 Iranian nuclear scientists. Spanish High Court Judge Baltasar Garzon was found guilty of one of the charges leveled against him by the new Spanish government- an analysis by a member of Human Rights Watch.

 

PROGRAM NOTES 02/10/12

From CHINA  Like much of the world, China is facing a future with a need for more fresh water. Desalination of sea water is increasing, but there are many serious problems with this method.

From JAPAN  There has been an increasing rise in the temperature of one of the reactor cores at Fukushima- attempting to cool the situation with water has not yet been effective. High levels of cesium have been detected in earthworms over a hundred kilometers away from the Fukushima reactors, thus entering into the food chain. Japan's nuclear safety agency plans to approve stress tests on two nuclear reactors, but the local population is very skeptical. S Korea has resumed negotiations with Turkey to build new nuclear reactors on the Black Sea coast. Pakistan has told Iran that it wants to go ahead with a natural gas pipeline despite objections by the US.

From CUBA  Wednesday saw 10 more Pakistan civilians killed by US drone missile strikes. In the Armed Forces Journal, a US soldier has contradicted positive reports on accomplishments in the war on Afghanistan. There is to be an expansion of US Special forces in Afghanistan. Then a Viewpoint on the 50th anniversary of the US blockade against Cuba.

From RUSSIA  Russia, along with China, vetoed a UN resolution about Syria, saying that the Western media is misrepresenting the ongoing civil war in the country. Anonymous, a loose-knit collective of hackers are breaking into government agencies like the FBI, Brazilian Banks, and Swedish government sites- they claim their actions are to preserve freedom of speech.

 

PROGRAM NOTES 02/03/12

This weeks show features stories from Spanish National Radio, Radio Havana Cuba, Radio Deutsche-Welle, and the Voice of Russia.

From SPAIN  Unemployment rates in the Eurozone have reached the highest level since the introduction of the Euro currency in 1999. The Spanish Supreme Court has refused to throw out the case against Judge Balthasar Garzon for ordering an inquiry into mass killings during the Franco era. Then Press clippings concerning demonstrations in support of Judge Garzon. The new government in Spain is placing restrictions on abortions. The British Navy is sending a new destroyer to be stationed off the coast of the disputed Falkland Islands. President Obama defended the use of drone attacks in Pakistan, saying that "drones had not caused a huge number of civilian casualties." In fact the drone strikes have killed between 400 and 800 civilians including 125 children.

From CUBA  Pakistan denounced the unexpected acknowledgement of the drone attacks by President Obama. The UK Supreme Court is to consider an appeal by Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. There have been demonstrations in the Philippines to denounce the possible expansion of US military presence in the country. At the Thematic Social Forum just held in Brazil, social movements called for a world march against capitalism on June 5th. Ecuador is calling on the developed world to reduce consumption levels and implement environmentally friendly technologies.

From GERMANY   Nigerian police arrested the spokesman for the radical Islamic sect Boko Haram which is blamed for hundreds of recent killings. UN secretary general Ban ki Moon has called on Israel to halt all settlement construction. Protests in Russia during December were the biggest since the end of the Soviet Union. February 4th is set as a day of massive protest against former President Putin, who is running to regain the post in March.

From RUSSIA   After announcing a loan guarantee to help Brazil develop offshore oil deposits, President Obama was disturbed to learn that the bulk of Brazil's oil will be sold to China.
