Was it Hitler, or was it that anarchist?

by Brent Herbert
We can never really know for sure...
Shortly after Hitler assumed power, some anarchist decided to strike a blow against the symbol of German oppression, by burning down the Reichstag. Hitler responded by suspending civil liberties, introducing phone tapping and mail opening, and setting up a police state which then empowered the Gestapo. For those who are unfamiliar with the details, the Gestapo were just the same cops the Germans had before, only now they had a new leader and a new set of rules.

Now to this day no one really knows for sure what happened late that fateful evening in Germany, and to this day people continue to ask the question, 'was it Hitler who burned down the Reichstag, or was it really just some anarchist?' For it turns out that if that anarchist did not really exist, then Hitler would have had to invent one. Now whether or not Hitler actually did go right ahead and invent some anarchist no one really knows for sure, and at the end of it all, it probably doesn't make a lot of difference, for the end result was the same. Given that anarchists are always around, all that Hitler would have to do is wait, and sooner or later some anarchist would burn down the Reichstag or perhaps trash a bank building. It would only be required that Hitler invent an anarchist if the Fuerhrer was running out patience and decided to speed things up a bit.

So then we must ask, was it some anarchist, or have the cops been dressing up as anarchists yet one more time, as everyone knows cops do. It seems funny to me that some people would become enraged if they found out that once again some cops were putting on black hoodies and ski masks and pretending to be anarchists. Apparently that is wrong for some reason, for only genuine anarchists should dress up in black hoodies.

A similar principle seems to apply to generic terrorists, and generic acts of terrorism, for we still don't know for sure if Osama Bin Laden knocked down those stock broker buildings, or if it was done by some Nazis associated with the American government. The end result is the same either way, and if some Nazis wanted to set up a police state, gut the constitution, read everyone's emails and tap their phones and so on, they could either wait for Osama Bin Laden or wait for some anarchist, or they could just go ahead and do the deed themselves and then blame it all on Osama or some anarchist.

Marinus Van Der Lubbe was not an anarchist. He was a left (or council) communist, who'd been expelled from the Dutch CP for being too independent. Getting expelled from a Stalinist organization doesn't make anyone an anarchist. So get your fucking facts straight before you try to score rhetorical points by alleging some state-sponsored plot. It's like all those idiots who claim that Gavrilo Princip was an anarchist. Just plain old ignorance. History Fail.
