Max's Restaurant forced out...
Hotel Frank for sale? Buyer Beware...
Hotel Frank workers were joined by a good number of Occupiers last Friday, January 20, as part of Occupy Wall Street West. Thanks to all, especially the crowd from Occupy SFSU. Let's do it again sometime...
We learned last week that the Hotel Frank bosses are forcing Max's On the Square to shut down, putting over 50 restaurant workers on the street. Max's, at the corner of Geary and Mason in the Hotel Frank building, has been a popular eaterie for 15 years. Max's is a separate business operated independently of the hotel. The restaurant is currently scheduled to close on February 26. Rumor has it that the hotel wants to replace the operation with a "fine dining" restaurant. The "eat the rich" jokes here are too obvious to repeat...
Stories are also being told that the hotel might once again be up for sale. UNITE HERE Local 2 posted a press release last Friday, titled "BUYER BEWARE" urging any prospective buyers "to conduct thorough due diligence... [and] examine this property thoroughly before any potential acquisition." Here is the link: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/buyer-beware-aew-may-seek-to-unload-hotel-frank-labor-dispute-according-to-unite-here-local-2-2012-01-20
The press release cites not only the ongoing BOYCOTT, but also
-> the outstanding National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) order regarding illegally fired and disciplined workers;
-> "over $800,000 in outstanding health and retirement payments on behalf of hotel employees;" and
-> "multiple violations of San Francisco building code, including one outstanding complaint of unpermitted construction on the hotel's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors
(which remain unoccupied by hotel guests)."
"These problems could amount to millions of dollars in outstanding costs, potential losses of future business, and necessary construction work."
Anybody want to buy a hotel???

Hotel Frank was auctioned off in a foreclosure sale in May, 2010 by WELLS FARGO.
The bank then sold the hotel to a financial speculator called AEW CAPITAL MANAGEMENT.
The hotel is now managed by a company called PROVENANCE.
Since the foreclosure sale:
• Management refuses to recognize the Union contract that existed for nearly 40 years.
• Management has not reached an agreement with us to continue our medical coverage or pensions.
• We all have to work an extra half-hour per day for free.
• Room cleaners clean many more rooms, even if it means skipping breaks and meal periods.
• Staffing has been cut at the front desk and in housekeeping, while the workload has increased.
• A federal judge has found the hotel guilty of firing and disciplining workers for Union activities
