A plague on both their houses

by Shawn Casey O'Brien
My comment on the "Stop the recall of Tracy Rosenberg" website at KPFA -- which they would not allow on their website - intellectual giants that they are.
As a former KPFK Staff Rep on the PNB for 2 years, I want all to know that I do not support SaveKPFA and I believe they should be investigated by the Attorney General's office for their apparent theft (by conversion) of approximately $60,000 dollars that should have gone directly to KPFA instead of SaveKPFA's website.

However, I have no sympathy for Tracy Rosenberg, because she and Carol Spooner empowered and elected these yahoos by running roughshod over our last elections and manipulating the current ED of Pacifica to choose a totally incompetent National Election Supervisor, who then went on to pick a bunch of Local Election Supervisors -- 4 out of 5 of which had no previous experience running elections -- and thus the election process was less than optimum and the results of both Listener and Staff elections are highly suspect.

Highly suspect because at every level we had incompetents in charge. All with the full support of Tracy Rosenberg and Carol Spooner.

For this disastrous election, the fruits of which are now recalling Tracy, we spent somewhere in the neighborhood $200,000 dollars of subscriber's money.

Tracy was responsible for this travesty and she has no one to blame but herself for the predicament she now finds herself in.

I say recall her and then the wiser minds of of KPFA should start asking Save KPFA: What happened to all that money they wrongly solicited through their website?

If they have not returned the money to KPFA proper, these same wise people should insist that Pacifica's CFO initiate discussions with the CA. Attorney General's office regarding all this.

A prerogative that the last PNB gave her -- I know, I brought the motion and it passed overwhelmingly.

As for Tracy and SaveKPFA - a plague on both their houses! Tracy should be recalled and SaveKPFA should be investigated, if, the listeners of KPFA ever want to clean up the mess that is our sister station in Berkeley.

Finally, no one should give Carol Spooner any credibility. It is she, who, as the Chair of the committee which wrote our terribly crafted bylaws, foisted this silly, anti-democratic governance system on us. A system which not only eats up hundreds of thousands of dollars of subscriber's money 2 out of every 3 years, but ensures the obstruction and constant in-fighting which are the hallmark of Pacifica governance. To say nothing of the fact that our election process is so convoluted that it takes a priesthood to divine the actual election results.

Truth be told, none of this expensive, narcissistic, silliness will end until we have a By-Laws Convention and write new, easy to understand by-laws. Bylaws that mandate elections where our own empirical senses tell us who won and who lost.

As the present situation demonstrates, this cannot happen soon enough.

Shawn is good people, but he's a bit on the burnt and bitter side - not an unusual souvenir from venturing into Pacifica governance. If Carol Spooner hadn't done what she did, there wouldn't be any KPFA to argue about now because it would have been sold.

Despite Shawn's complaints, election supervisors have nothing to do with who wins elections. Money does. In the world and in Pacifica too. Get the money out of politics and then there's some hope. LA and NY (Sean is from LA) had wealthy angels on the democratic side who underwrote campaign mailers. Berkeley didn't in the last election, so you got different results. Pretty obvious.

I was there when one of many discussions with recent national election sup occured of whom O'Brien complains. His way of behaving was not a discussion, however, but to barrel through with his own idea, and to turn and bad-mouth the majority when the chance was taken to go another way. There were problems with all ways, and indeed, the fact that a few can STILL get so far in buying elections at Pacifica is the reason. A self-appointed board was worse, and certainly would be worse now. He was in a postion to do more than most to change the way things worked. A great part of that is respectful dialog, not O'Brien's strong suit. For every problem now, going back to the pre-Spooner way would expound each of those problems. We must work together and around obstructionists such as O'Brien to improve the beginning of a better way. Yes, Shawn, doubtless you have been "good people," but now you are being extreme and scary.
