Message from Freedom Plaza, Washington D.C.
The temperature is dropping, the U.S. Park Service turned off the electricity (although the Stop the Machine! encampment has a permit until December 30th), Cali right wing congressman Issa started an investigation into our receiving a permit in the first place, and the social service worker working with the Traveler's Aid desk refuses to give protesters a Greyhound bus voucher to leave Washington D.C.
Warm spiritual greetings, In the midst of continuous protests, demonstrations, and direct action, plus running buses out to Fort Meade for the Bradley Manning trial, plus taking in all of the homeless who showed up and providing them with food, tents, and clothing, we are besieged by the right wing politicos of Washington D.C. who are doing everything possible to get rid of us. The temperature is dropping, and we expect snow soon, plus our U.S. Park Service permit runs out December 30th. I am NOT being spiritually called to live outside all winter in the District of Columbia, to stop the machine for world peace, for the humanity's benefit , or for the well being of planet earth. I am, however, seeking cooperation to return to California, and I need a place to go to put my backpack and duffel bag and sleep initially.
Since October 18th, when I arrived in New York City at Zuccotti Park-Occupy Wall Street, it's been constant right wing political harrassment, tricky weather, and general support from middle class America locally. I was there for the police raid at 1AM, which was just crazy. Following that, I went to Washington D.C. to join the Stop the Machine! encampment at Freedom Plaza, located at 14th Street NW and Pennsylvania Ave., three blocks from the White House.
Frankly, I think that the United States of America is in a precarious position, with materialism now proving to be unsustainable, and it appears that the postmodern American culture has nowhere to go in a spiritually ascending sense. The official Washington D.C. political response is against us at our protest encampment, and is an example of how confused this society can be. Obviously, the Veterans for Peace group, who are keeping our camp functional, are against war. The members of our camp who have done significant service work oppose extreme income inequality in a rigged system, and we are in opposition to all of the racist, classist, and general at-risk homeless social situations in Washington D.C.; in other words, we are against freezing to death! Those of us who have cultivated a spiritual life in one or another tradition are beyond fed up with the insane attitude all around us in official Washington D.C. that wishes that we weren't here. WE ARE HERE, AND WE DON'T CARE IF ANY ECONOMIC OR POLITICAL INDIVIDUAL OR ENTITY DOESN'T LIKE US, PARTICULARLY DURING THE CHRISTMAS SEASON.
This is how it is at the Stop the Machine! encampment on Freedom Plaza in Washington D.C. tonight. I am now requesting cooperation to return to California as soon as possible, including inside housing for myself. I wish everyone a happy holiday, Craig Louis Stehr
