East Bay | Education & Student Activism | Environment & Forest DefenseDiesel Discharge in Strawberry Creek from UCB Lab
This is footage of Strawberry Creek taken late morning Monday Dec 12th. The 1,700 diesel discharged came from a leak at the bioengineering facility in Stanley Hall late Saturday evening and early Sunday morning. The odor was still very noticeable, and the diesel is still clearly visible. There are small boom/skimmers placed in the creek at different locations, but a substantial amount of diesel had already made it to the bay before they were placed. And even with the skimmers, some diesel is still passing down the waterway.

This is footage from Dec 14, the Wednesday after the 1,700 gallon diesel spill into Strawberry Creek, leading to San Francisco Bay.
Fresh booms and skimmers had been placed into Strawberry Creek prior to this footage being taken. However there was still a lot of diesel in the watershed. There are less booms and skimmers in the water Weds, despite the amount of contamination still present. Asides from a residual sheen, there are still substantial patches of diesel which had collected along the sides of the creek. There was a distinct lack of bug life (water striders and etc) in this portion of the creek. |
