Interview with Kenneth Carrethers on BART Police Beating, Civil Suit, & Equal Rights: video

by Dave Id
In November 2008, Kenneth Carrethers was beaten and hogtied at the Oakland Coliseum BART station by BART police officers after he complained about his car being broken into in a BART parking lots. The officer that first physically grabbed him from behind was Johanness Mehserle, just six weeks before Mehserle shot Oscar Grant in the back on the Fruitvale station platform on January 1st, 2009. Kenneth Carrethers filed a civil suit against the five officers involved in the beating which was heard before a jury in late November of this year. That jury included no African Americans. Kenneth Carrethers had broken no laws, but Meheserle insisted in court testimony that he knew that Kenneth was about to attack another BART officer. The jury came back with a decision clearing all of the BART officers of wrongdoing for the beating. In this interview, Kenneth Carrethers discusses the beating, the civil suit, and the equal rights still unrealized for African Americans. [video below]
