Call To Defend Occupy Berkeley Camp

by Oaks4Peace
On the evening to 10/24, Occupy Berkeley was given a notice by Jim Hynes, the assistant to the city of Berkeley's General Manager. The notice includes that Occupy Berkeley cease camping, as well as cease it's kitchen operation. Jim Hynes would not comment as to a time table for an eviction of the camp; the police could come at anytime. The camp's electricity has been disabled by the city.

=================
SCHEDULE FOR OCCUPY BERKELEY:
DAILY: 6PM General Assembly MLK Park
Oct 25: 6:45 Debate city council to stop eviction
Oct 27th: Noon "Occupy UC Berkeley" marches from UC campus to meet "Occupy Berkeley" at MLK
Oct 30th: 3PM "How Occupy Berkeley Can You Be?" Costume, potluck, rally
=================

This is direct call for assistance for the camp, which is at MLK Park (aka Civic Center Park). Occupy Berkeley does not wish to thin out the numbers of other occupations who are also in threat of eviction. The camp would prefer to have new campers who have been on the fence about joining an occupation, as to not draw people away from other protests.

The notice given to the camp is not a formal eviction, but a precursor to an eviction. At this time no police warning has been given, however there may not ever be a warning before they come.

Asides from camping, Occupy Berkeley is being directed to take down all banners and signs which are hanging from trees, and occupiers are forbidden from even climbing trees. All non-permitted amplified sound is being forbidden as well.

So not only is the city stiffing Occupy Berkeley's freedom to assemble, but the city is placing restrictions on speech and non-verbal communications.

Tues 10/25 at 7PM is a City Council meeting, and Occupiers intend to face City Council about the current turn of events. Please show your support at council chambers, which is located directly across from the occupation.

All General Assembly Meetings are held at 6PM every evening.

it should be noted that there have been no motor vehicles in the park, there has been no graffiti, and the camp has been keeping a clean/orderly area.
