San Francisco | Police State and Prisons | Racial JusticeMidnight March Against Police Killings, Mission District, San Francisco, 7/17/11: photos
Seven hours after Kenneth Harding was shot down in the Bayview neighborhood by San Francisco police, before much was known about the incident other than the first few eyewitness and police reports, a march through the Mission District protested the killing. As the march began about 15 minutes past midnight on a Saturday night, bars in the area on Valencia Street were packed with revelers, some who cheered on the march and many who were informed for the first time about the killing earlier in the day on the other side of San Francisco. As the boisterous march snaked back and forth through Valencia, Mission, and side streets, police trailed demonstrators, protected the Mission Police Station, gave orders to move from the streets to the sidewalk, and attempted to block marchers a couple of times, but no arrests were made. After an hour, protesters dispersed on their own by melting into the crowd at 16th and Mission. ![]() midnightantipolicemarch_0... Demonstrators kept to their word and did return to this police station just over two days later during a larger "Rage in the Streets" march that began about 6pm on July 19th at Dolores Park.
