In July 1979 the Sandinista Front for National Liberation successfully carried out a revolution against the Somoza dictatorship, with mass support of the people. But for the next 11 years, the U.S. government financed a destructive and bloody Contra war that killed over 50,000 Nicaraguans, in order to try to keep the rich oligarchy in control, and to protect U.S. corporate interests. In 1990, after U.S. pressure and funding of the oligarchy opposition, the FSLN lost the elections to the UNO rightwing candidate Violeta Chamorro.

In 2006, after years of economic disaster and high unemployment, the FSLN candidate and former president Daniel Ortega, won the presidential election again.

Come join a presentation and Nicaraguan cultural dance and poetry, to celebrate the 1979 revolution and learn about the gains and challenges facing the Nicaraguan people and
Sandinista government.
