Friends of Oakland Tool Library Urge City Council to Save Libraries, 6/21/11: photos
With rakes, shovels, and drill bits in hand, a Friends of the Tool Lending Library delegation filled the Oakland City Council’s Budget Hearing at City Hall on June 21st. During Open Forum, several representatives from the Friends of the Tool Lending Library stepped forward to address the City Council and remind them of the importance of all of the Oakland Public Libraries. Their message: these tools repair Oakland, build Oakland, improve Oakland, and most of all belong to Oakland. We will not let you take away our tools and our libraries!
[Pictured above: many of the tools checked out of the Tool Lending Library for the action]
The Tool Lending Library is housed within Temescal Branch, one of the 14 of 18 Oakland Public Library Branches slated to close under Scenario A of the Mayor's proposed FY11-12 budget. Scenario A will close 14 branches (including AAMLO and the Tool Lending Library), end Second Start Adult Literacy, and leave only four locations which would be open two or three days a week with limited services. At Main, the Oakland History Room, Children's Room, and Teen Zone would be closed. For more details, see the PDF attached below.
