No-Nuke Contingent @ SF Peace Rally

by Mei Bo Chan
A convergence of events brought out protesters in rain to San Francisco's Peace Rally at UN Plaza today. On the 8th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, US military action in Libya began today. It has been a little over one week since the gigantic earthquake and tsunami hit the northeast of Japan, and the last few days have shown that nuclear power can never be deemed safe, with a nuclear meltdown at hand.

The Raging Grannies joined a no-nuke contingent and carried signs showing their solidarity with the huge Japanese union Doro-Chiba Railway Workers. The Grannies carried signs in Japanese and English and wore costumes meant to show their hopes for a nuclear free future.

Beneath the nuclear umbrella
We’re as safe as we can be.
Reagan was such a pleasant fella
He looked out for you and me
We don’t have to think about it
Our defense has been assured
What would we all do without it?
Don’t it make you feel secure?
....NOT!

The tune from this Granny song is from a traditional hymn. IRONICALLY, the tune was used with different words in a Japanese movie about a post apocalyptic world
