San Francisco supervisors tell Pacifica to negotiate over Morning Show layoffs

by by KPFA Worker
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors went on the record yesterday to urge Pacifica to negotiate transparently and fairly over the removal of the KPFA Morning Show.
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors went on the record yesterday to urge Pacifica to negotiate transparently and fairly over the restoration of the KPFA Morning Show. The vote on the resolution was 7-4. Supervisors John Avalos, David Campos, David Chiu, Chris Daly, Sean Elsbernd, Eric Mar and Ross Mirkarimi voted for the resolution. Supervisors Carmen Chu, Bevan Dufty, Sophie Maxwell and Michela Alioto-Pier voted no.

The resolution noted that the KPFA Morning Show is an “important civic forum for the San Francisco Bay Area,” and said layoffs of senior staff had created “great disruption” at KPFA and concern among listeners. It was a response to Pacifica executive director Arlene Engelhardt’s layoff of Morning Show hosts Aimee Allison and Brian Edwards-Tiekert, in violation of the Communications Workers of America Local 9415 union contract. The layoffs have sparked grievances and charges before the National Labor Relations Board.

Thousands of listeners have lodged complaints since the layoffs, asking for return of the Morning Show. Engelhardt’s selection of volunteers and unpaid staff to host a substitute 8 am program has caused a sharp decline in KPFA’s morning audience, with likely financial repercussions.

Engelhardt has claimed the layoffs were financially motivated and has told some listeners that if enough funding were available she would bring the program back. New KPFA general manager Amit Pendyal started work today at the station, and ultimately may be the one who makes a decision on reinstating the Morning Show.

There is nothing to negotiate; Pacifica has the right and duty to defend its budget and lay off as many people as possible to do just that. The Democrats (they all are) sitting on the Board of Supervisors do not run KPFA; Pacifica's national board does. The station manager does not decide the budget; Pacific'a national board does and it tells the station manager what to do as it hires and can fire this station manager. The Thug Hallinan Gang was bleeding KPFA dry, which would have bankrupted the entire Pacifica network this year. The Board of Supervisors cannot even manage this City, much less our radio station. You will note that the most anti-labor thug on the Board, Sean Elsbernd, joined the majority in this non-City business issue and the one person who has been and perhaps still is a member of a labor union, Sophie Maxwell, voted no. The concern obviously is not the non-existent decline in listenership (I am now listening to the 8 a.m. show whereas before the layoffs, I stopped years ago). The concern is that it is succeeding; otherwise there would be no reason to have this whining.

TRY RUNNING OUR CITY, BOARD OF SUPERVISORS. The first thing you need to do is get a Temporary Restraining Order to stop Lt. Gov Newsom from making mayoral appointments to destroy rent control, which is what his appointments of mayor and, if he appoints District 3 supervisor Chiu to be DA, his appointment of a replacement for this majority tenant district with mostly rent-controlled apartments, built before 1979. Nazi Newsom sure is gruesome, and so is this time-wasting resolution. You can be sure Nazi Newsom, the nephew of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, is not acting on his own. As a political person, he is always acting on orders of his rotten party, representing the capitalist class. Thus, the Thug Hallinan Gang ran to the agents of the capitalist class, the Democrats, to tell our non-profit charity dependent on listener contributions and a handful of grants with 80% of the 200 plus workers being volunteers, attempting to provide viewpoints that contradict those of the capitalist class, what to do. SHAME ON THE ENTIRE THUG HALLINAN GANG AND ITS REPUBLICAN PARTY PLANT, BRIAN EDWARDS-TIEKERT. THE DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS, ONCE AGAIN, ARE SHOWN TO BE THE TWIN PARTIES OF WAR AND FASCISM.

Here is the police video of some 3 San Francisco police murdering a man on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 with rifles in a wheelchair supposedly with a knife, about 10 feet away from them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnDSC2QnLWw
This is from an article on The New Morning Show in KPFA at
http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/01/05/18668378.php

On December 29, 2010 SF police murdered a man inside his home who happened to have a knife. This is the Democratic Party's police, the machine that runs the local city government that the Thug Hallinan Gang ran to for support.

And now the police want tasers. THE SOLUTION IS NOT MORE VIOLENCE BUT LESS VIOLENCE. The police need to be disarmed, and if that means abolishing the police department, let's do so right now. The police are not social workers; they are just vicious thugs. AND WHAT IS THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS DOING ABOUT THE SPEED TRAP OUTSIDE THE STOCKTON TUNNEL NEAR SUTTER STREET? One motorcycle cop stands there with his radar gun and stops people who are going over 25 mph. These police get over $100,000 a year plus benefits to slaughter us and to threaten our car insurance rates. They do not solve any problems whatsoever and are not in a position to do so.

This is the same progressive majority on the SF Board of Supes that got snookered and totally outmaneuvered by a conservative mayor who just got to appoint his own successor. This is the same progressive majority on the SF Board of Supes that just approved a private police force to rid the Civic Center area of "undesirables".

Maybe they need to focus a bit more on doing their work - and a bit less on trying to get their friends jobs back.

by DUMBOFCRATIC BOARD STUPIDVISORS
Because they want their Dumbocratic slot on prime time to promote their own unprogressive agenda, since their losing their credibility in the city just like the republicrats

I don't know what that amateurish clap trap is at 8AM on KPFA now, but good radio it ain't. The announcers sound like they've never been behind a microphone in their life. The topics are canned, boilerplate and boring political axe grinding and not intelligent debate covering all sides of a particular issue. It seems like the people producing the shows are using it as their own soap box and covering their own pet issues, without much concern for important topics that might be of interest to the wider Bay Area listening audience. It's sad what's become of KPFA. It's amateur hour there most of the time.

And some people thought the old Morning Show was a barren desert of predictable ponderings by the same old tired parade of professors and democratic pols spouting platitudes and huckstering their latest book or campaign for political office.

So it goes.

On September 8th, 2010, the old KPFA Morning Show aired a thoroughly uncritical interview with John Prendergast, whom they presented as a stop genocide activist particularly concerned with Africa and, most of all, with oil rich Sudan---although they, the old Morning Show, mentioned neither Sudan's oil, which the U.S. is mightily interested in, nor Prendergast's Zionist obsession with taking out Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir because he supports Palestine and Hammas.

Prendergast heads the ENOUGH Project, a mightily endowed "advocacy organization" lodged deep in the bowels of the Democratic Party----the Clintonista Center for American Progress, in D.C.

ENOUGH exists to make the national security state look like it's responding to constituents and activists, when it's really just responding to itself. Prendergast, was the Director of African Affairs on Bill Clinton's National Security Council and Special Advisor to his Under-Secretary of State for African Affairs, Susan Rice, who is now Barack Obama's Ambassador to the UN. Prendergast was advising Clinton's National Security Council during the Rwanda Genocide and ensuing Congo War, so to anyone who looks more closely at this, Prendergast has no "stop genocide" credentials at all---indeed, quite the opposite. No one is more guilty for the the genocidal massacres in both Rwanda and Congo than the Clinton Administration and its National Security Council, including Prendergast, and current UN Ambassador Susan Rice. See Global Research, "Rwanda: Installing a US Protectorate in Central Africa," http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/CHO305A.html.

That old Morning Show interview presenting Prendergast as an African human rights and stop genocide activist was worse than terrible radio. It was national security state radio with no opposing viewpoints.

I will say that I have nothing against Aimee Allison, who hosted that segment, and that I don't believe that she or the producers were intentionally fronting for national security and the Pentagon. I think they were just, like so many, taken in by the Save Darfur Coalition and ENOUGH Project propaganda. I wouldn't bring it up at this point if I weren't so tired of hearing people trash the volunteer efforts of the new Morning Mix.

I suggested that they invite Prendergast on with Ugandan American Black Star News Editor Milton Allimadi to counter.
