An Incredible Two Years

by Sudhama Ranganathan
During the run up to the elections just held we heard many refrains over and over from those seeking to take power. One was that the new administration, less than two years in power, had failed to live up to all their promises, which in many ways is true. The rhetoric held the White House promised many things and had not lived up to them. They told us this was something which should have been accomplished in less that two years time.

From this many things may be inferred, but one is most certainly that the next two years will be an incredible chapter in the history of US politics. What we can infer is that they are certain that they can and will do better over the same stretch of time. What we can infer is that they have something in their pockets Democrats do not, and that is, among other things, the power to accomplish all their campaign promises in less than two years.

For anyone saying, “well that’s impossible – no one can” they obviously have not been listening to the speeches handed out over the last two years. These weren’t just over the last few months for the purposes of campaigning, not that that would really change things, but were consistently repeated almost since late January of 2009. These were the consistent mantras of “they had better live up to their promises by 2010,” “they will not be able to live up to their promises” and the subsequent “they have failed to live up to their promises made in 2008 and previously.”

That’s fine, and accountability is a good thing, especially in government. We need people willing to hold themselves and others to high standards, and with two years now the sworn timetable of the people just elected into office, we are surely on the cusp of a new age in American politics never before witnessed in our history.

Over the next two years the newly elected members of the senate and the house have promised to implement all the things they said they would and that they would have the effects stated. We will see all federal spending shrunk to next to nothing. This will immediately turn our economy around and we will see our nation navigated out of the recession due to what they have implemented.

We will see an immediate freeze on stimulus spending including in the states those members wanting to freeze those dollars reside, even if that means people go jobless, highways stay bottlenecked, buildings remain partially constructed and money those representatives proudly took credit for back home while deriding the disbursement of such funds to the national media gets handed back in full.

That joblessness, decaying infrastructure and freezing of construction projects will bring about the greatest spurt of growth ever seen in the western world. We will see the results immediately and people will have more money in their pockets, banks will suddenly begin to lend to small businesses and people seeking mortgages and the jobless rate will drop to record lows specifically as a result of legislation they introduce. It will not be as a result in any way of policies implemented by the Obama administration or that will be a failure on the part of those just elected on the new mandate. It will prove them wrong and that will be unacceptable.

All this and so much more will happen in less than two years, as the promises made over the recent campaign season have told us as much. All this will turn around our economy so fast our collective heads will spin. America will have accomplished something which no other western nation was able to accomplish through immense tax breaks, severe spending cutbacks and expensive inquiries into the other party’s goings on over the last two years.

How the last part contributes to a massive reduction in government spending is beyond me, but it is being promised now as a part of the agenda, which according to all the polls during the election was, among conservative voters at least, to cut back government spending and be as fiscally conservative as possible in order to turn around our economy.

Worrying about women’s rights issues in the workplace like equal pay and more will not be necessary. Anything socially related will be handled by the market place and morals. Although, that led to Jim Crow, high workplace mortality rates, no health coverage, no maternity leave, a lack of reasonable wages and child labor in the past it will somehow be different now. How? Well, nobody has been able to pin that down. But that too will all revolutionize our nation over the next two years.

Just imagine what we will look like. Imagine where we will be. Imagine the kind of sweeping changes we can look forward to in less than two years. That is, unless we’ve been lied to.

But they said they would be different, and even pledged it, so this will be something new. If not then neither party is able to keep their promises and it’s time for the voters to introduce third, fourth even fifth parties into the mix to truly set up the kinds of checks and balances the two party monopoly system has failed to provide us. But for now we will go with the premise, the next two years will shake things up like never before, as that’s what was promised. Only time will tell.
