Film Screening"Lafanmi Selavi" to benefit Haitian Farmers

by max
Come learn about Haiti, about urban farming or food fermenting, or just watch an outdoor movie and take part in this event series to support reconstruction, sustainable agriculture, and food sovereignty in Haiti. The Ecology Center, People’s Grocery, Haiti Action Committee, Food First, Planting Justice, Phat Beets Produce, and KPFA’s Hard Knock Radio have partnered to produce a series of events to benefit the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund (HERF) sustainable agriculture programs and to help people in the Bay Area understand what’s really going on in Haiti. Click here for more details.
Begin with a tour of the California Hotel Microfarm with People's Grocery at 6:30pm (light snacks and Numi Tea served) or arrive at 7pm for the film. The California Hotel is a historic building in West Oakland that now serves as SRO housing, and is home to Just Cause Oakland and the People's Grocery Greenhouse and Microfarm. The film "Lafanmi Selavi" is an illuminating documentary by Bay Area filmmakers that tells the story of a group home founded by Jean-Bertrand Aristide for the homeless and abandoned children who live in the streets of Port-Au Prince. Many come from the countryside where the farming life is too harsh and barren to make a go of it in the current situation. "Lafanmi Selavi" provided not only shelter from the life on the streets but an education, Montessori style, that would provide a glimmer of hope for Haiti's uncertain future. This event is part of the "From the Bay Area to Haiti: Creating Local Food Sovereignty Benefit Series" sponsored by: Ecology Center, People's Grocery, Haiti Action Committee, Food First, Planting Justice, Phat Beets Produce & KPFA (Hard Knock Radio). All events benefit the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund (HERF) sustainable agriculture programs. RSVP by email.
