Jobs with Justice San Francisco ![]() a100915jobsemergency3874.... JOBS EMERGENCY DECLARED:
This is Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Federal economic stimulus funding passed by Congress last year created jobs in non-profit organizations to provide services to the community in the Jobs Now and Community Jobs Program. That funding ends September 30, 2010, and so do those jobs. On September 15th a vigorous rally in front of Senator Feinstein's office in downtown San Francisco was the site of demonstrators with placards demanding full and fair employment. During the rally they called for job stimulus funding for the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) Emergency Fund. They also demanded that Congress pass the Local Jobs for America Act. A large banner drop sent a message to local senators. It read, "Boxer and Feinstein: Job Crisis! Extend the TANF Emergency Fund Now!" The event was sponsored by organizations including Jobs with Justice San Francisco, the Progressive Workers Alliance, the Chinese Progressive Association, and the San Francisco Living Wage Coalition.

According to Harry Shearer (whose weekly informative rant Le Show is broadcast each Saturday on public radio), the airport scanning devices rightly the subject of so much uproar were paid for with economic stimulus funds. Shearer also indicated that former DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff has a financial stake—imagine that!?—in a company awarded a contract to provide airport scanners. (I believe he said Chertoff was "the" or "an" owner of the company in question, but I don't recall. For details, check the Le Show archives for the show aired around 11/20.)
