Stop Big Oil! Hell No on Prop 23 Rally in Mountain View
Passage of Proposition 23 this November would be a big blow to our attempts to control global warming, so folks are having rallies against the proposition. This one was at the Valero station near El Camino and Grant in Mountain View. Valero Energy Corp. has contributed millions of dollars to help get the proposition on the ballot, and they'll probably flood the state with money to try to get it passed.

Valero calls Prop 23 the California Jobs Initiative. We call it the Dirty Energy Proposition.
There is no connection between greenhouse gas emission reduction and the loss of jobs. In fact, there is job GROWTH in the clean, renewable energy industry. PROP 23, IF PASSED would make fantastic profits for the oil industry, BUT NOT CREATE JOBS. it would increase air pollution, especially in communities around refineries. And just since when did the oil companies start to show any concern for the unemployed and their families? They want to protect their profits first and foremost.
We want to crush Proposition 23 and show the country and the world that California won't let corporations write our laws OR decide our climate future. Depending on the outcome of the election this fall, our state will either be the world’s leader in the fight against global warming, or it could become the latest casualty in corporate takeover of government.
About 30 people demonstrated in Mountain View at a Valero gas station near Grant Rd. today; meanwhile a slightly smaller demo took place in Palo Alto. Activists carried signs including one that said:
Valero, Don't Mess with Calfornia!
The Raging Grannies were on hand in Mountain View along with Palo Alto and San Jose Unitarians for environmental justice and other local citizens. More rallies are planned.
