Women's Equality Day in San Mateo Features Costumed Speakers, Guests
Jei Africa welcomed a crowd gathered to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the 19th amendment today. She is President of the San Mateo County Commission on the Status of Women and is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in addressing domestic violence. The Commission, in conjunction with US Congresswomen Jackie Speier and Anna Eshoo, held the event in the Rotunda Hall of the San Mateo History Museum.
San Mateo women and men commemorated the 90th anniversary of women's suffrage today. Many women dressed in costume including historic dress. One wore a hat made to look like a ballot box, another sported an apron that said "Keep Abortion Legal".
The event featured live music followed by appearances by Rep. Anna G. Eshoo, and Rep. Jackie Speier. Jackie Speier sported a lovely white dress, similar to what suffragettes of the 1920's wore, for the occasion. Speier said that, "whenever women are in the process, that process works better," and encouraged high school age young women, who attended the gathering, to strive to improve the lives of others.
Rep. Anna Eshoo said that the fight for women's equality must continue. To great applause and nods of agreement, she reminded the crowd that a woman's right to choose is under attack. She said that Roe v. Wade must not be weakened, and encouraged women to consider what real equality means today, 90 years after women's suffrage.
