Peninsula | LGBTI / QueerVictory Over Prop 8 Celebration in Silicon Valley
Federal Judge Vaughn Walker has ruled that Proposition 8, the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriages in the state, is unconstitutional under both the due process and equal protection clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Silicon Valley community celebrated with rallies at the DeFrank Center in San Jose and in front of City Hall in Mountain View. Similar celebrations were held throughout the state. Although this is a major victory on the way to achieving full equality, the decision will be appealed by Prop. 8 supporters to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which handles federal appeals for the western states. The case is likely to eventually make it to the U.S. Supreme Court. But on the evening of August 4th, celebrants put aside those concerns for the moment as they rallied in Mountain View.
