The ninth annual Bay Area Peace Lantern Ceremony, a Japanese-style event for expressing desire for peace in the world and remembering those who have died in war, takes place on Saturday, August 7, a day set between the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 65 years ago.
JAPANESE-STYLE LANTERN CEREMONY AUGUST 7 IN BERKELEY
TO COMMEMORATE ATOMIC BOMBINGS, EXPRESS HOPES FOR WORLD PEACE
The ninth annual Bay Area Peace Lantern Ceremony, a Japanese-style event for expressing desire for peace in the world and remembering those who have died in war, takes place on Saturday, August 7, a day set between the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 65 years ago. In this ceremony, hundreds of hand-decorated, candlelit lanterns will be floated at sunset at Berkeley's Aquatic Park.
The volunteer-run event begins at 6:30 p.m., when the Bay Area public is invited to decorate peace lanterns and learn to fold origami peace cranes. All materials are provided, and the event is free of charge. Every year, several hundred people from the Bay Area and elsewhere, including many children, participate in the event.
