While recovering from major cancer surgery, Stewart Alexander limited most of his campaigning as a Candidate for California Governor to Riverside County; where he resides in the City of Murrieta. During the weeks before the June 8 Primary date, Alexander often participated in voter registrations on the college campuses of Riverside Community College, Mount San Jacinto Community Colleges and UC Riverside. Other members of the Peace and Freedom Party gathered support for his campaign throughout the State of California.

Now, with only 170 votes between himself and PFP candidate Carlos Alvarez, Riverside County Registrar of Voters Barbara Dunmore says her office made an error and will not count 12,563 absentee ballots.

According to the North County Times (Californian), “Dunmore said those (the 12,563 absentee ballots) were mailed on time. But they sat in a Moreno Valley post office on election night – only a few miles from the registrar’s office and weren’t in the hands of election officials until the next morning.”

Stewart Alexander says “This is totally unacceptable; the voters cast their votes, then an elected official destroys the voting rights of thousands of registered voters. They deserve to have their votes counted.”

According to The Press Enterprise, “Activists, union and community officials in Riverside County said Wednesday, they’ll fight to have electioneers count 12,563 ballots left at a post office and deemed ineligible.”

California Assemblyman Jeff Miller, R-Corona, is calling on Dunmore to step down. In a statement to the Californian, Assemblyman Miller said “It is complete incompetence, gross mismanagement and proof positive major change is needed right now.”

Stewart Alexander is calling on California Attorney General Jerry Brown to investigate this violation of voter rights and says it is also the responsibility of Secretary of State Debra Bowen to insure that every vote is counted. “Unless the 12,563 votes are counted, the election is not valid.”
