From nurses in the Philippines to farmers in Senegal to Indian software engineers in California, economic migration is an increasing trend that has left no corner of the globe untouched. Meanwhile, the world’s migrants are being faced in the United States and many other industrialized countries with a growing debate over immigration. While the pursuit of opportunity will continue to motivate people to migrate, why have many policymakers engaged in the debate treated the issue in isolation from its causes? Jeffrey Kaye joins the Council to discuss the connection between globalization, economic growth and immigration. Focusing attention on the politics and economic practices, in both rich and developing nations that are pushing, pulling and moving millions around the globe, Kaye argues that we need to develop a better understanding of the reasons why people migrate to allow for more humane and rational migration policies.
