Hunger Strike - Cinco De Mayo
Here's just a little sample from the third day of the hunger strike outside California Hall on UC Berkeley campus.
===================================
As the strike grows, the police presence has also been growing.
How long will the UC tolerate a strike?!?
PLEASE SUPPORT THE FASTERS
Outside of CALIFORNIA HALL, UC BERKELEY CAMPUS
===================================
The fasters maintained their presence on the strip of grass infront of the hall. Many others were there in support of the fasters and the social causes they are protesting for. Entrance to the hall itself was blocked off by UC Police. The police were concerned that there was going to be an occupation, thus Wheeler, California and Dwinelle were all protected by police. A fair number of UCSF police were also on scene to help quench a dreaded uprising, or a quasi-militant occupation, which never occurred (how embarrassing!) .
The fasters have a large supply of liquid nutrition. The community which is growing around the protest is donating juices, water, tea, and honey.
Different speakers helped educate and strengthen the fasters as they undergo their strike. One guest speaker taught breathing techniques, and encouraged the fasters to keep their minds in the present moment.
Another guest speaker talked about the importance of clean water. She spoke about the ubiquitous plastic bottle, which water is so often trapped in by corporations. Plastic bottles do leech chemicals, which people in turn end up drinking. She encouraged the communty to bring liquids in metal or glass vessels.
There is growing interest in the hunger strike. There is a good number of fasters, and more are joining in. The surrounding protest is gaining many more people. The area is adorned with signs and people are distributing fliers regarding the demands of the strike.
