Guerilla Art Squad Hangs Posters on BART to Protest US Funded Israeli Apartheid
Activists wishing to give city commuters a snapshot of the harm created by US military aid to Israel replaced corporate advertising in BART trains with their own poster late last month. They put 150 copies of a poster accusing the US of funding Israeli apartheid in San Francisco trains during the early morning hours on the last day of March.
Two members of the guerilla art squad, who were temporarily detained by BART police, explained that they were commemorating Land Day which in recent years has been designated a Global Day of Action for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions by the Palestinian BDS National Committee. Land Day is observed annually by Palestinians and their allies in remembrance of the events of March 30, 1976 when Arab citizens held a general strike to protest land confiscations by the Israeli government. Six demonstrators were killed by Israeli forces that day, and many more were injured.
