George Monbiot: UK Inquiry "Toothless" and "Feeble" in Probing Origins of Iraq War

by via Democracy Now
Wednesday, February 17, 2010 :As the Iraq war continues, Britain is in the midst of an ongoing public inquiry into the lead-up to the 2003 invasion. The public hearings began in late November and the committee is expected to report its findings later this year. We speak to author and columnist George Monbiot, who has begun a campaign encouraging citizen's arrests of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair for crimes against peace in Iraq.
We turn now to Britain and the ongoing public inquiry into the United Kingdom’s role in the US-led war in Iraq. Chaired by Sir John Chilcot, the inquiry will consider Britain’s role in Iraq from the summer of 2001 to the end of July 2009, embracing the run-up to military action, the invasion, and the aftermath. The public hearings began in late November and the committee is expected to report its findings by June of this year.

Late last month, amidst angry protests from anti-war activists and the parents of slain British soldiers, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair testified on the origins of the war. He ended his six-hour public testimony by defending the invasion and saying he had no regrets about toppling Saddam Hussein.

As the public inquiry into Britain’s role in the Iraq war continues so does the war.

George Monbiot, columnist for the UK Guardian newspaper and the author of several books. Earlier this month he began a campaign encouraging citizen’s arrests of Tony Blair for crimes against peace in Iraq.

Amy Goodman's worthless. She only finally covered it because The Common Ills and The Third Estate Sunday Review have been shaming her online about her silence. Then she does an awful job with tool George Monbiot. Tony Blair?
Even NPR, let me repeat: EVEN NPR, covered Tony Blair's testimony the day it took place. Now, a month later, Goodman shows up and doesn't know what the hell she's talking about nor does Monbiot. He's written how much on the inquiry? One column.
Andrew Sparrow live blogs the hearings for The Guardian. Richard Norton-Taylor is among those reporting (since November when public hearings started) on the hearings for The Guardian. Chris Ames writes opinion pieces for The Guardian and does Iraq Inquiry Digest.
George Monibot's an idiot who can't be bothered with the time required to follow near daily developments. Amy Goodman spent two weeks at Sundance Film Festival 'reporting' and wants to tell us she's doing the war and peace report. But she had no time for Clare Short or Michael White or Elizabeth Wilmshurst all of whom gave explosive testimony. Elizabeth Wilmshurst not only gave the legal opinion, before the start of the war, that it was illegal, she resigned before the start of the war in protest.
There's been tons and tons of testimony about the 2002 Crawford ranch meeting between Blair and Brown. The inquiry is recalling Tony Blair because his testimony so obviously contradicted. His crony Alastair Campbell, asked about Iraq on TV, began sobbing about how mean everyone was to poor Tony Blair.
And George Monibot wants to pretend he has something to say?
And Amy Goodman wants to pretend she's done something?

Here's a link to a cartoon from January 31st ridiculing Amy Goodman for her silence on the Iraq inquiry.
