Mujda Zhublawar of the Hayward Rotary Club introduced guest speaker Dr. Mohammad Qayoumi ahead of a screening of the film, Rethinking Afghanistan. Dr. Qayoumi said, "Afghanistan needs an education surge", and described the sense of betrayal felt by the people of Afghanistan as the international community continues to support a corrupt regime. He pointed out that under the Bush Administration, from 2002-2004, more money was supplied for garbage trucks in Iraq than for education in Afghanistan. He said that the US can best invest in the stability of Afghanistan through education and that currently three-quarters of the Afghan people are under 25 years of age.
Frequent indybay contributor and member of the San Jose Peace and Justice Center Sharat G. Lin was introduced by the Raging Grannies who sang an anti-war song. Dr. Lin said of the situation in Afghanistan, "we need a development program rather than a military approach." He gave a brief introduction to the movie and led a discussion after the screening.
