China Bosses Davos as Nobody Discusses What Happened to Google

By Rob Delaney and Ari Levy

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=atF6ms3zqviw

Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc.’s opposition to censorship in China was the one topic left off the table in Davos -- at China’s request.

“China didn’t want to discuss Google,” Josef Ackermann, chief executive officer of Deutsche Bank AG and a co-chairman of this year’s World Economic Forum, said in an interview. China’s Vice Premier Li Keqiang made that clear, he said...

At Davos, financier George Soros, economist Joseph Stiglitz and French President Nicolas Sarkozy debated technology topics including social networking and 3-D features used in the motion picture “Avatar.” The discussion didn’t address the conflict between China and Google, even during panels on “The Rise of Asia” and “Redesigning the Global Dimensions of China’s Growth.” ..

In remarks circulated on the front page of China’s newspapers, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said in an interview this week on ABC News’s “Good Morning America” that “Chinese efforts to censor the Internet have been very limited.”

Gates declined to comment on Google in an interview in Davos.

(Can someone please get Bill Gates some truth serum-a free dose perhaps? Note: PSEA's documents are generally available atgoogle.cn

our documents are banned at baidu.com China's State sanctioned search engine.)

Google wasn’t mentioned in either of two China-oriented Davos panel discussions: One called “U.S.-China: Reshaping the Global Agenda” and another on “Redesigning the Global Dimensions of China’s Growth,” which featured Alcoa Inc. CEO Klaus Kleinfeldand Blackstone Group CEO Stephen Schwarzman. The participants debated topics including what China Central Television host Rui Chenggang called a “self-righteous” Western media’s misapprehension of China. Rui and Schwarzman both declined to comment about Google after the panel..

“People have their commercial interests,” Deutsche Bank’s Ackermann said.

Apple: Still kowtowing to Chinese censorship

Apple has worked for years to build a company image as freedom-loving and iconoclastic. But the truth is far darker: Apple is cooperating with the Chinese government to ban iPhone applications in China related to the Dalai Lama and Uighur activist Rebiya Kandeer, even though it once highlighted the Dalai Lama in its "Think Different" campaign. One word describes Apple's behavior: hypocritical. ..

That theme continued through the years, notably with a "Think Different" campaign in 1997. Here's the text from the first ads, which link using Apple products to world-changing free-thinkers such as Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lennon, and, ironically, the Dalai Lama.

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. “ Apple

An iPhone application containing 100 of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini's speeches has become the second most downloaded item in Italy, it emerged today.

The application, called iMussolini, is available on Apple’s on line store for 79 euro cents (59p).

According to Italy' Apple iTunes store, it has been downloaded more than a hugely popular video game based on blockbuster film Avatar.

ANALYSIS China's strident tone raises concerns among Western governments, analysts

By John Pomfret

Washington Post
Sunday, January 31, 2010
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/30/AR2010013002443.html

From the Copenhagen climate change conference to Internet freedom to China's border with India, China observers have noticed a tough tone emanating from its government, its representatives and influential analysts from its state-funded think tanks...

Analysts say a combination of hubris and insecurity appears to be driving China's mood. On one hand, Beijing thinks that the relative ease with which it skated over the global financial crisis underscores the superiority of its system and that China is not only rising but has arrived on the global stage -- much faster than anyone could have predicted. On the other, recent uprisings in the western regions of Tibet and Xinjiang have fed Chinese leaders' insecurity about their one-party state. As such, any perceived threat to their power is met with a backlash. ..

The unease over China's new tone is shared by Europeans as well. "How Should Europe Respond to China's Strident Rise?" is the title of a new paper from the Center for European Reform. Just two years earlier, its author, institute director Charles Grant, had predicted that China and the European Union would shape the new world order.

"There is a real rethink going on about China in Europe," Grant said in an interview from Davos. "I don't think governments know what to do, but they know that their policies aren't working."

U.S. officials first began noticing the new Chinese attitude last year. Anecdotes range from the political to the personal...

David Finkelstein, a former U.S. Army officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency who now runs the China program at the Center for Naval Analyses, said the new tone underscores a shift in China. "On the external front," he said, "we will likely see a China that is more willing than in the past to proactively shape the external environment and international order rather than passively react to it."

An example would be events that unfolded in December when 22 Chinese Muslims showed up in Cambodia and requested political asylum. China wanted to hold seven of them on suspicion of participating in anti-Chinese riots in the Xinjiang region in July.

Under intense pressure from Beijing, Cambodia sent the group home, despite protests from the United States. Two days after the group was repatriated, China signed 14 deals with Cambodia worth about $1 billion.

(China)Sanctions target US firmsBy Wu Jiao (China Daily)

For the first time Beijing vowed to censure private companies involved in the arms sales to Taiwan by the United States, a measure seen as concrete by experts and demanded by Chinese netizens for a long time.

China said it would impose unspecified sanctions on the companies involved and reduce international cooperation with the US unless it canceled the new arms package. The foreign ministry didn't list the companies involved in its draft statement over the weekend.

But Sikorsky, Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon and Boeing, are four companies involved in the latest $6.4 billion sale. All four have so far declined to comment to the press.

Boeing has big commercial interests in China, the world's most populous market, including commercial aircraft sales. United Technologies, which owns Sikorsky, also has significant business in the country, where it sells Carrier brand heating and air-conditioning, Otis elevators and escalators and other products.

Experts, while hailing the sanction as the most concrete countermeasure so far, said the government should weigh the sanctions in a cautious way as those companies have close trade cooperation with China.

Yuan Peng, head of US studies at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, said that imposing sanctions for the first time signals China is more serious than ever in its reaction to the arms sale.

Ye Hailin, an expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said the sanctions mean that those companies who try to profit from the deal need to pay the price.

"You cannot just make money from both Taiwan and the mainland," said Ye.

Many Chinese also applaud the sanctions.

"We should make the US feel more pain over the arms sale. They deserve this concrete punishment," said Gao Jie, a resident in Beijing.

According to Li Qinggong, deputy secretary-general of the China Council for National Security Policy Studies, arms makers, including Lockheed Martin Corp and Raytheon Co, have actually been long kept out of the Chinese market despite the fact that China has a huge demand for radars and related equipment because of its airport expansion.

On the website of Lockheed Martin, the global section listed the ROK, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and India under its category of "Asia Pacific market", but not the Chinese mainland. The company's last business with the mainland can be traced to 2002, when it provided seven air traffic control automation systems.

Li said it was relatively easy for China to ban pure arms sellers, but it would be very complicated to sever the relations with Boeing and the United Technologies.

"It is still unclear whether the sanctions mean to be effective against the whole group or just the unit involved," said Li. "Yet our government should weigh the sanctions in a cautious way to avoid hurting overall trade relations."

Like previous US governments the Obama administration has been closely linked with arms manufacturers.

Robert J. Stevens, chairman, president and CEO of Lockheed Martin made a large donation to the Democrats since the Obama administration came to power. William J. Lynn, the current Deputy Secretary of Defense, used to be chairman and chief executive officer of Raytheon Company.

Other US politicians are also closely linked with the arms sellers. FedSpending.org, a website of the watchdog group OMB Watch, reported in 2008 that 151 members of Congress invested close to a quarter billion dollars in companies that received defense contracts of at least $5 million in 2006. These companies got more than $275.6 billion from the government in 2006, or $755 million per day, said the report.

Iran Warns Against Protests During Islamic Republic Anniversary

January 31, 2010 By Ladane Nasseri

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-01-31/iran-warns-against-protests-during-islamic-republic-anniversary.html

Jan. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, which helped quell demonstrations against the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, warned that protesters during the Islamic Republic’s anniversary will be considered foreign agents.

“If there is any voice or color other than those of the Islamic Revolution it will be pushed aside and if a minority makes this attempt, it will be firmly confronted,” Brigadier General Hossein Hamedani, head of the guards in Tehran, said on SepahNews, the organization’s Web site. Anyone who protests “is not Iranian and will be considered an agent of foreigners.”

The guards led a crackdown against protests following Ahmadinejad’s disputed June re-election, which led to the deaths of 44 people, according to official figures. The government has banned protests and the opposition recently has taken to the streets during national or religious events. The anniversary of the Islamic Republic is Feb. 11.

Iran yesterday started the trial of 14 male and 2 female protesters accused of involvement in last month’s demonstrations, which coincided with the Shiite Muslim holy day of Ashura.

‘Enmity Toward God’

Five of the defendants are facing charges of “enmity toward God” and the others are being tried for taking part in “illegal protests, threatening national security, and spreading propaganda against the establishment,” state-run Press TV news channel said...

Those convicted of being enemies of God face the death penalty.

ranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in a Tehran conference Saturday that whoever controls the Middle East controls the world, the semi-official Fars News Agency reported.

In a speech during a conference marking 30 years to the Islamic Revolution, Ahamdinejad reportedly implied that Iran is the top power in the Middle East. "Now the question is who has the last say in the Middle East? Well, of course, the answer is clear to every one," Ahamdinejad said.

A Kuwaiti newspaper published over the weekend a list of 66 senior Iraniangovernment officials holding a fortune totaling some $16 billion abroad, according to American estimates.

The fortune is comprised of US dollars (about $9 billion), euros (about €4.3 billion) and pound sterling (about £1.15 billion).

The Iranian officials appear to be aware of the monitoring of their personal wealth, and have decided to scatter the risk and deposit their funds in Arab banks, in Asia and in Europe. Some of the sums are frozen as part of the international sanctions.

According to Arab sources, the details on the wealthy people are mostly based on news spread by the exiled opposition, and thus some of the data may be exaggerated.

Mahdi Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president's eldest son, is said to have €18 million in Belgium, €45 million in Switzerland and €44 million in an Islamic bank in a United Arab Emirates country.

Ghulam Hussain Elham, the former Iranian government speaker, has $25 million in Dubai, $13 million in Turkey, $17 million in Switzerland and $700,000 in Beirut.

Nazia Khamenei, a relative of Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei, is also on the list. She has €7 million in Turkey, €65 million in Germany and £122 million in bank accounts in Britain.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the supreme leader's son, who is considered one of the people in charge of corruption in the Iranian economic system, is said to hold some £1 billion in England, although these funds have recently been frozen as part of the sanctions. However, Khamenei still has €2.2 billion invested in Germany, $766 million in Qatar and unknown sums in Swiss banks.

The Iranian chief of staff's name is also on the list. According to the report, General Hassan Firouzabadi has $320 million in bank accounts in Malaysia, $65 million in the UAE, $103 million in Kuwait, $17 million in Turkey and unknown sums in Switzerland

Moscow police break up unsanctioned rally, detains about 100

Moscow police detained some 100 people, including several prominent opposition leaders, after an unsanctioned rally in downtown of the Russian capital, a police official said.

Moscow police spokesman Viktor Biryukov said about 300 people, including leader of the opposition movement The Other Russia, Eduard Limonov, former Russian deputy prime minister Boris Nemtsov and head of the Memorial human rights group Oleg Orlov, gathered on Triumphalnaya Square on Sunday in anti-Kremlin protest.

"After repeated requests to stop the rally, police detained about 100 people, including Boris Nemtsov, Eduard Limonov and Oleg Orlov," he said.

The protesters said they gathered to show that the authorities are violating the Russian Constitution, which grants the right to assemble peacefully.

James Hansen compares “global warming” to slavery, Nazism

And furthermore, he’s tired of even his AGW allies “compromising” on the issue, and believes that Copenhagen will solve nothing:

In an interview with the Guardian, James Hansen, the world’s pre-eminent climate scientist, said any agreement likely to emerge from the negotiations would be so deeply flawed that it would be better to start again from scratch.

“I would rather it not happen if people accept that as being the right track because it’s a disaster track,” said Hansen, who heads the Nasa Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York.

[...]

Hansen is also fiercely critical of Barack Obama – and even Al Gore, who won a Nobel peace prize for his efforts to get the world to act on climate change – saying politicians have failed to meet what he regards as the moral challenge of our age.

In Hansen’s view, dealing with climate change allows no room for the compromises that rule the world of elected politics. “This is analagous to the issue of slavery faced by Abraham Lincoln or the issue of Nazism faced by Winston Churchill,” he said. “On those kind of issues you cannot compromise. You can’t say let’s reduce slavery, let’s find a compromise and reduce it 50% or reduce it 40%.”

He added: “We don’t have a leader who is able to grasp it and say what is really needed. Instead we are trying to continue business as usual.”

U.S.: Climate Justice Activists confront Carbon Trade Summit in NYC

1/13/2009 – New York, NY – In the wake of a controversial outcome at the Copenhagen climate talks, a diverse crowd of scientists, Faith congregation, activists, students, and concerned citizens converged in confrontation and protest at the 2nd Annual IGlobalForum Carbon Trading Summit today. The summit is the largest annual meeting place of corporations, banks, and lobby groups to further the agenda of a carbon trading scheme to address climate change. Activists rallied to oppose market-based trading of greenhouse gas emissions credits and call for real solutions to the climate crisis. Dr. Maggie Zhou of Secure Green Future Massachusetts was among the demonstrators who engaged in in nonviolent direct action and risked arrest in attempt to blockade a portion of the venue’s revolving doors to display a banner decrying carbon trading as a false solution.

“The same Wall Street bankers who gave us the global climate crisis are trying to own the sky,” stated Brian Tokar, director of the Institute for Social Ecologyand an organizer of this week’s protest events. “Carbon trading is unjust, it will not work, and it is a false solution. It is a dangerous distraction from the urgent measures needed to prevent an ever-worsening destabilization of the climate.”

Speakers at the rally included Reverend Billy of the Church of Life After Shopping, who delivered a critique with the fire and brimstone of a televangelist;Bhaia Heller, Professor of Womens Studies at Mount Holyoke University andFather Paul Mayer, co-founder of the Climate Crisis Coalition and religious community leader.

Participants inside the Carbon Trading Summit will include executives from JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Duke Energy and more.

“I don’t trust these people to make decisions about the future of humanity,” said one young participant, who wished not to give her name because she will be risking arrest today. “If we follow through with market-based solutions like carbon trading, everyone will regret it. We need to stop believing the corporations’ false solutions and put all our collective energy into getting this conversation onto a track that’s useful.”

Dr. James Hansen, renowned climate scientist, was present outside the Carbon Trading Summit yesterday to voice his opposition to carbon trading schemes.

“Cap-and-trade is not a smart approach,” wrote Hansen his book Storms of My Grandchildren. Hansen has stated that current US climate legislation is “worse than nothing” because it relies on risky and ineffective cap-and-trade. He also declared that the failure to reach an agreement in Copenhagen was a better outcome than adopting the carbon-trade-based approach that was being negotiated.

“Carbon trade, which includes cap and trade and offsets are a dangerous distraction, economically risky, and prone to gaming and speculation,”stated Dr. Maggie Zhou, from Secure Green Future and Climate SOS stated. “Offsets allow polluters to simply pay someone else somewhere else to reduce their emissions on your behalf, which in the end does nothing to actually reduce emissions. The climate crisis simply can’t wait!

“Carbon trade is an insidious threat to human rights,” stated Dr. Rachel Smolker from Biofuelwatch and Climate SOS. “It turns rights to pollute the atmosphere, as well as forests, soils and agriculture practices that store carbon into commodities to be bought and sold as excuses for polluters. This is the greatest corporate grab on the “global commons” ever! It is disastrous for most of humanity.
