Education News and Opinion: from education's MVP's (Most Valuable Players) . . . the Teachers!
"Teacher, speak out!" #7 — "A Passionate Impasse"
"Teacher, speak out!" #6 — "Cabrillo College: Unkindest Cuts"(Dec. 14, 2009)
Funding cuts have put increased pressure on mandated programs at Cabrillo College. Additionally, students looking to improve job skills while unemployment runs high, find themselves out in the cold as classes are dropped. Joining producer and moderator Peter Nichols are History Instructor Enrique Buelna, Digital Media Instructor John Govsky, Cabrillo Stroke and Disability Center Instructor Beth McKinnon, Learning Skills Program Director Deborah Shulman, and Cabrillo Stroke Center Director Debora Bone. (TRT 28:30)
"Teacher, speak out!" #5 — "Administration Compensation"(Sept. 30, 2009)
Recent publication of top-level school administrator salaries stirred feelings of resentment among teachers and others in the community. Comparisons are made to salaries of Members of Congress and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Joining producer Peter Nichols are Santa Cruz County Superintendent of Schools Michael Watkins, Greater Santa Cruz Federation of Teachers President Barry Kirschen, Pajaro Valley Teachers Negotiator Jack Carroll, Renaissance High Teacher Jennifer Laskin and Pajaro Valley Unified School District Trustee Sandra Nichols. (TRT 28:30)
"Teacher, speak out!" #4 — "The Parcel Tax Solution" (Sept. 30, 2009)
Are local taxes the solution to local district budget shortfalls? Can PVUSD, with a too-top-heavy administration, convince a community with high unemployment and foreclosure rates to support a Parcel Tax? Appearing are: Teachers George Martinez, Harbor High, Santa Cruz; Andy Hsia-Coron, Pajaro Valley High, Watsonville; Amy Spiers, Branciforte Middle, Santa Cruz; PVUSD Trustee Sandra Nichols, Larkin Valley. Peter Nichols, series producer moderates. (TRT 28:30)
"Teacher, speak out!" #3 — "School District Consolidation" (Oct. 20, 2009)
Could consolidation of nine smaller school districts help solve their budget-deficit problems? Former Santa Cruz City Schools Superintendent Alan Pagano thinks so while County Superintendent of Schools Michael Watkins thinks not. Also appearing are: Soquel Elementary Kindergarten Teacher Doug Breen, former Pajaro Valley Unified School District Trustee, Rhea DeHart, and sitting PVUSD Trustee Sandra Nichols. (TRT 28:30)
"Teacher, speak out!" #2 — "School District Priorities" (Aug. 3, 2009)
Of concern is one district's decision to eliminate class size reduction for kindergarten and third grade. Then there's the movement to not use Federal stimulus money for salaries. And the highly questionable claims of administrative position cuts in the face of nearly 180 teacher layoffs. Appearing are: Karen Richmond, Valencia Elementary, Aptos; Pabo Barrick, Watsonville High; Ann May, Landmark Elementary, Watsonville; Sarah Henne, H. A. Hyde Elementary, Watsonville; and Sandra Nichols, PVUSD Trustee, Larkin Valley. (TRT 28:30)
"Teacher, speak out!" #1 — "Negotiations Impasse" (Aug. 17, 2009)
Achieving contract fairness through Binding Arbitration and preventing substantial salary and benefit cuts, is the goal of negotiators for PVUSD teachers as they head into mediation. Appearing are: Francisco Rodriguez, teachers union president; Jack Carroll, union negotiator; Pablo Barrick, Watsonville High; Sarah Henne, H. A. Hyde Elementary, Watsonville; and Ann May, Landmark Elementary, Watsonville. (TRT 28:30)
"Teacher, speak out!" #0 — "Town Hall Board Meeting" (June 11, 2009)
This is the one that started it all. Seeking to respond to community criticism for it's budget cutting, board members respond to questions from teachers and other citizens. Have priorities been established? How were priorities determined? Why were new assistant superintendent contracts approved only one month before teachers were laid off in 2008? Are any administrators being cut? Bob Gomez sings "5.5 Administrators Get Canned" to the delight of teachers and to the consternation of Trustee Doug Keegan. (TRT 58:30)
