The original Cannabis Culture Facebook Page, which had over 25,000 fans, (and was available at this link) was erased by Facebook administrators on December 23, 2009. Shortly afterward, administrators of the page received an email message:

Hello,

You created a Page that has violated our Terms of Use. A Facebook Page is a distinct presence used solely for business or promotional purposes. Among other things, Pages that are hateful, threatening, or obscene are not allowed. We also take down Pages that attack an individual or group, or that are set up by an unauthorized individual. If your Page was removed for any of the above reasons, it will not be reinstated. Continued misuse of Facebook's features could result in the permanent loss of your account.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can visit the Terms applicable to Facebook Pages at http://www.facebook.com/terms_pages.php.

The Facebook Team

Several attempts by CC editors to contact Facebook for more information have gone unanswered, leaving little hope of recovering our 25,000+ fans.

Interestingly, when CC editors attempted to create a new Facebook Page with the words "cannabis" or "marijuana" in the title (in a number of different combinations - even just the words by themselves) an automatic message replied:

Our automated system will not approve the name "cannabis" because it contains a word or phrase that is blocked to prevent the creation of unofficial or otherwise prohibited Pages. If you believe this is an error, please contact our Customer Support team.

The new page is title "CC Magazine", as the word "Cannabis" is no longer allowed, despite hundreds of other Facebook Pages with the word featured prominently in in the title.

Is Facebook banning cannabis-related websites? Cannabis Culture is exploring the issue and will present more information soon.

It seems that Facebook has turned to their community council to help clean up the site, and in their all-seeing wiseness they're blocking the dirty stuff. according to the above linked article on Mashable, "The app’s tagging system allows council members to tag content with one of eight phrases: Spam, Acceptable, Not English, Skip, Nudity, Drugs, Attacking, and Violence. If enough council members tag a piece of content with the same tag, action is taken, often a takedown."

This presents a problem because this group in my opinion is concerned with political advocacy, and the focus of drugs is secondary. I strongly suggest that Facebook do some re-evaluation of their policies.
