Caltrans To Move Migrant Camps For Hwy Project
Several northern San Diego County migrant camps will be removed next month because of a Highway 76 widening project, Caltrans said.
VISTA, Calif. -- Several northern San Diego County migrant camps will be removed next month because of a Highway 76 widening project, Caltrans said.
Human rights activists were notified by the California Department of Transportation and are organizing efforts to assist the migrant workers.
Oceanside activist Jose Gonzalez visited the area Wednesday to alert migrants.
Notices in English and Spanish have been posted telling people they must leave, Caltrans spokesman Edward Cartagena said.
There are about eight migrant camps on Caltrans property, but the number of people living there hasn't been determined.
The camps will be removed on Jan. 7.
Construction on the highway's 5.5-mile stretch from Oceanside to Bonsall begins in mid-January and will take two years to complete.
