Rainbow Rainbow

by Shekinah
Rainbow Theater at UCSC: Home of the Brave.
First and foremost Rainbow Theater produces plays about the 'Uses.'
Everyone has a line, a story, someone's rhyme
that will remember YOU.
You don't have to do any of the work this time
just sit there and let the magic happen.
and maybe it's only for a second
but that second will last a lifetime
Cuz theater has a magic to it like nothing else in the whole world.
and you'll walk around with that feeling of gladness, despair and joy combined
inside your heart and inside your mind
Cuz it'll be the moment you begin to again inhabit your own story
with the powers to shape it
the moment you begin to stop erasing some part of you
that you have long participated in silencing for someone else's sake
and we know what that's like
but Rainbow cracks that ice
gives us an opportunity to grieve and breathe through it
to where we can remember the truth of what has happened to bring us here
so we can recall that we must never have given up struggling to survive because here we are
and maybe we'll be have to be surprised to recognize that hope has always always survived
Rainbow draws our attention to the cracks in the window
and it brings the rain we need to bring our bodies back to life again.
Rainbow is as beautiful
as the moment when that part of you that you had so long ago gave up on
begins to rear its ugly/beautiful head and tells you 'here I am'
and I have been waiting for you to find me.
Rainbow challenges us to let go of our God-given right to clutch our suffering and instead choose to surrender to the love of our community as we let ourselves grieve.
Rainbow is about learning to recognize that our own stories are not so different from the stories of other people in your community
but we are also shown we are connected through the stories we choose to tell and how we choose to tell them.
Rainbow also challenges the audience to go to places they might not immediately want to go to.
There are no closets here
and no spaces to hide in
Everything Rainbow represents is only for the willing
Rainbow is for those who know something is wrong
with the lies we have been given
to be truth for so long
and who are ready to explore what that may be.
Rainbow is about acknowledging that we are all kept under lock and key
but that we also keep ourselves there
that ya those around us and our ancestors may have erected cages for us to live in
but we're the ones who choose to stay there
we ignore the open doors that we are given
in the name of staying still
we ignore our truths in the name of pleasing other people because 'that's what people do'
but what if we don't have to?
Rainbow makes a brave space out of a college auditorium
makes a loving space out of the clamped down muscles inside of our chests
reminds us our hearts lie between bones and poetry, song and story
and that somewhere in the unknown spaces and the silence of what lies unexplored inside our bodies, our souls that we remain afraid to touch afraid to find out that something is there, something always has been there, after all--
someone is listening.
Come to Rainbow. Be transformed.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
