Where Room and Board Is Nearing $16,000 a Year
By Jacques Steinberg
This is clearly emerging as “watch your wallet” week on The Choice.
After telling you earlier about the nearly 60 colleges that now charge more than $50,000 in tuition and fees, and of the nearly two dozen college presidents whose annual pay tops $1 million, we bring you this: A listing of 20 colleges whose room and board alone exceeds $12,500 a year for a typical freshman.

At the top of the list, courtesy of Campus Grotto, a college information Web site, is Eugene Lang College at the New School in New York City, with a rate of $15,990 for a “standard double room.” Rounding out the top five, at least by Campus Grotto’s math:
— Cooper Union, also in New York ($15,275).
— Suffolk University in Boston ($14,544).
— University of California, Berkeley ($14,384).
— New York Institute of Technology ($14,290).
If readers of The Choice who’ve already gone the dorm-room route have cost-saving tips for those yet to embark on this process, please use the comment box below.
Meanwhile, you can see how our colleagues at Education Life described some new dorms at Purdue ($14,204), Boston University ($14,728) and George Washington University ($13,250) by clicking here.
